What is your book about?
It?s about creating the life you want to live now. Over 20 years as a Certified Financial Planner, I had hundreds of people say to me, ?I don?t want to retire to sit back and do nothing. I want to retire so I can finally go do what I?ve always wanted!?
But with true financial independence getting harder and harder to achieve, people need to know there is a way to do what you?ve always wanted that doesn?t require accumulating a retirement fortune first.
As such, the book is divided into two sections. The first helps the reader re-examine their attitudes and beliefs so that they can take the first step to making a change in their life. ?As money is often the obstacle that prevents people from making those changes, the second section provides step-by-step financial education on how to arrange your priorities, manage your expenses and ease the financial pressure so that you can finally do what you?ve always wanted.
What inspired you to write your book?
This book was in large part inspired by a personal health crisis. I was definitely on the fast track in the career rat race when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 40. All of sudden, all those things I had been spending my time and energy on didn?t seem that important anymore. While I had been experiencing tremendous career and financial success, I had little social life, barely saw my family, had become spiritually disconnected and had no outside interests. And the worst part is I really didn?t like the job I was spending all my time and energy at! I had become one of the ?walking wounded? doing all that I could to accumulate enough money so that one day I could retire and not have to work anymore. I was working so hard on creating a future that I forgot to create a life in the present.
How did you come to do what you?re doing today?
I?ve always enjoyed speaking and writing, and found that this message really resonates with a lot of people. In my case there are two natural markets ? the general public who are looking to make changes in their lives, and the financial advisors who help them arrange their finances to do so. ?By creating websites, self-assessments, presentations, books and other articles on this topic I was able to take a passion I have and create tools that others in my natural markets find valuable and are willing to pay for.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
I work 24/7 ? 24 hours a week 7 months out of the year. ?My typical day includes a couple hours on the phone with clients, a couple hours writing or preparing presentations and an hour or so returning emails, doing web research or other misc tasks. ?I often work from home and make sure I take time to exercise and attend my kids? functions.
What do you most enjoy about what you do?
All of it. ?I love the schedule I?m able to keep, the interaction with clients I truly care about and the energy of speaking in front of live audiences.
Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?
The people who inspire me are the ones who are at peace with themselves, know their purpose and cannot be swayed from the path they choose to follow.
Can you share some business tips for our readers?
I think three things are critical:
1. ?Have a vision for where you want to go.
2. ?Create a Marketing Plan to get there.
3. ?Get help from those in your network. ?You cannot do it alone.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Through our website at?www.Retirement2020.com, we provide a self-assessment tool created by a team of psychologists, life coaches and financial advisors to help people create a vision of the life they really want to lead. I invite everyone to take our assessment as the first step to defining your unique vision.
Lastly, I love talking with people! Feel free to reach out to me if I can be of help in any way!
