Doctor says he was surprised to find penile cancer (AP)

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. ? A Kentucky doctor accused of amputating a man's penis without consent has testified that he was surprised to find the tip of the organ riddled with a rare and deadly cancer.

Dr. John Patterson, a Frankfort urologist, testified in Shelby County Circuit Court on Monday. He says he could not insert a catheter into Phillip Seaton and cut off part of the man's penis so he would not develop kidney damage. The doctor says he expected to treat only inflammation.

Patterson says he did not consult with Seaton's wife, Deborah, because she had not accompanied her husband to his office or the hospital's pre-operation area.

Deborah Seaton, the final witness of the day, testified she didn't go to the pre-op area because her mother's death a few months earlier made it uncomfortable.
