Australians Think Elders Should Share in Cost of Care reports ...

San Francisco, CA- An overwhelming majority of people in Australia think the elderly should shoulder part of the cost of their own care.

A recent survey by Menzies-Nous that looked at health and elder-care issues found 92% of respondents believe people with the means should pay for at least part of their elder care.

?An overwhelming majority of older Australians recognize and are prepared to meet some individual costs associated with aged care,? Gillian McFee, a top adviser at Nous Group, told AAP.

She said the findings of the survey support plans by the government to reform the system of care for the elderly. A proposal to separate care and accommodation charges was announced in April.

?It?s a tick for the general direction,? McFee said.

Starting in the middle of 2014, charges would be $25,000 a year for elder residential care and as much as $10,000 annually for home care, with a lifetime limit set at $60,000. The proposal would enable nursing homes to set charges for cases that involve intense care.

The Menzies-Nous survey found that 77% of Australians think the elderly should not have to sell their homes to cover the cost of care. The administration of Julia Gillard has pledged to create exemptions for family homes based on wealth measures.

Most Australians would prefer in-home care to elder-care centers, McFee said, and 91% want to government to do more. McFee added that satisfaction rates are ?very low? for residential care.

But people are more satisfied with the health-care system in general than they were four years ago, the survey found. About 54% of respondents think the system needs an overhaul. By contrast, 63% felt that way in 2008.

More Australians think the health-care system is working ?pretty well.? The number in 2012 has gone to 37% from 21% that was previously surveyed.

Fewer people now demand ?radical reform,? said the Menzies Center deputy director.

?But there is still over 50% who want major reform and the change may be partly because it?s less in the news,? James Gillespie told AAP.

He added that the change in sentiment since 2008 has come mainly from urban areas.

At six months, development of children with autism like those without

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Robots in the home: Will older adults roll out the welcome mat?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Robots have the potential to help older adults with daily activities that can become more challenging with age. But are people willing to use and accept the new technology? A study by the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates the answer is yes, unless the tasks involve personal care or social activities.

After showing adults (ages 65 to 93 years) a video of a robot's capabilities, researchers interviewed them about their willingness for assistance with 48 common household tasks. Participants generally preferred robotic help over human help for chores such as cleaning the kitchen, doing laundry and taking out the trash. But when it came to help getting dressed, eating and bathing, the adults tended to say they would prefer human assistance over robot assistance. They also preferred human help for social activities, such as calling family and friends or entertaining guests.

Georgia Tech's Cory-Ann Smarr will present the results this week at the Human Factors Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting in Boston.

"There are many misconceptions about older adults having negative attitudes toward robots," said Smarr, a School of Psychology graduate teaching assistant. "The people we interviewed were very enthusiastic and optimistic about robots in their daily lives. They were also very particular in their preferences, something that can assist researchers as they determine what to design and introduce in the home."

Smarr and Psychology Professor Wendy Rogers, the principal investigator on the project, also noticed that preferences varied across tasks, such as medication. For instance, adults said they are willing to use a robot for reminders to take medicine, but they are more comfortable if a person helps them decide which medication to take.

"It seems that older people are less likely to trust a robot with decision-making tasks than with monitoring or physical assistance," said Rogers. "Researchers should be careful not to generalize preferences when designing assistive robots."

The older adults in the study were all healthy and independent, and nearly 75 percent said they used everyday technologies such as cell phones and appliances. Many said they don't need immediate assistance. The research team is planning future studies for adults who currently need help with everyday tasks.

Romantic relationship Advice ? Can A lengthy Distance ...

We have all heard the actual phrase ?absence makes the heart grow fonder?. But is the fact that really the case? In case you are inside a long distance relationship, how can you know your partner will remain true to you? The good thing is attempting to carry on the relationship if you have a significant amount of range between the both of you is challenging, but not not possible.

The main factor that possibly gives a relationship sexual stamina or signals its demise? is believe in. Do you both have trust in another? And has been this trust apparent and also strong before the separation? These types of questions have to be truthfully clarified from your heart to be able to justify the rest of your feelings.

It is obvious why trust is undoubtedly a problem: your partner is not around for you to see what is really taking place. Company wants to be unfaithful badly enough, they will find a method to do it, and also probably get away with it. You will be aware from the way the both of you served before the separation whether trust is definitely an issue. If there is no doubt in your mind, and you also feel the both of you are extremely committed to the actual staying power of the relationship which no one could get in the manner, then trust remains.

After trust, you should take a look at how connected you were before the separation. Had you been experiencing any troubles? Was the link there or was there some reluctance on the part of possibly of you? In the event that either of these problems were present, a separation will only make things even worse.

Next, look at just how deeply involved you both were with each other. Had been it casual dating or even something a lot more? Casual internet dating doesn?t stand much of a chance long distance, but if there are sets off and that extra some thing you only get from the person you are meant to end up getting, then you?re in luck. You do have a fighting chance as long as you are both willing to always fight to keep it in existence.

A long distance relationship also offers the ability to bring out certain behaviours in your spouse you might not have got ever witnessed before. Here are just a few:

  • it is becoming increasingly harder to get in touch with all of them.
  • these people seem to be very jealous of to go, anything you have been carrying out and who spent time along with.
  • these people expect you to stay home and not possess a living.
  • these people grow defensive when you start asking all of them about what they are carrying out, or where they are heading.

You should evaluate whether the package in general, may be worth staying with and working hard on. If you and your spouse don?t equally agree it is, perhaps you should let go.

What makes you stay with a long-distance relationship? What emotions are in the heart of this decision. What you may are telling your self? What exactly are your values?

For nearly quarter of a century Beverleigh Piepers provides searched for and discovered the principles to help you get towards the root reasons for your crisis.

The answer is not in the endless volumes of information you find over the internet, or maybe the advice your friends give? it?s within yourself; the thoughts that make you who you are.
