'Underwear bomber': I wanted to avenge Muslims

A Nigerian man purportedly trained by al-Qaida said Wednesday he tried to blow up an international flight on Christmas with a bomb in his underwear in retaliation for the killing of Muslims worldwide, taking a federal court in Detroit by surprise as he pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab calmly answered questions from U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds before pleading guilty to all eight charges he faced, including conspiracy to commit terrorism and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

He then told the courtroom he was fulfilling a "religious duty" that day and participating in an act of jihad against the United States. He said the underwear bomb was a "blessed weapon to save the lives of innocent Muslims."

"The United States should be warned that if they continue to persist and promote the blasphemy of Mohammed and the prophets ... the United States should await a great calamity that will befall them through the hands of the mujahedeen soon," Abdulmutallab said.

"If you laugh with us now we will laugh with you later on the day of judgment," he said.

Outside court, defense attorney Anthony Chambers said Abdulmutallab, who had chosen to represent himself and was being assisted by Chambers, pleaded guilty against the lawyer's wishes.

"We wanted to continue the trial but we respect his decision," Chambers said.

Abdulmutallab will be sentenced January 12. He faces up to life in federal prison.

Abdulmutallab, who told the judge he is 25, said he carried a bomb in his underwear onto Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas 2009 with the intention of killing the nearly 300 people on board. The bomb didn't work, and passengers jumped on Abdulmutallab and subdued him when they saw smoke and fire.

Prosecutors' evidence was stacked high. Abdulmutallab was badly burned in a plane full of witnesses. The government said he told FBI agents he was working for al-Qaida and directed by Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical, American-born Muslim cleric recently killed by the U.S. in Yemen. There were also photos of his scorched shorts as well as video of Abdulmutallab explaining his suicide mission before departing for the U.S.

Timeline: Timeline of 'underwear bomber' attack (on this page)

In September 2010, Abdulmutallab suggested he wanted to plead guilty to some charges. But he didn't, and instead dropped his four-lawyer, publicly financed defense team and decided to represent himself. He said relying on others wasn't in his best interest.

His lawyers at the time said they had talked to prosecutors about a possible plea deal. Abdulmutallab had asked the judge what he needed to do to plead guilty to some charges. She referred him to Chambers.

Passenger Lori Haskell, 34, of Newport, watched Abdulmutallab's plea in an overflow room Wednesday. She called his statement in court "chilling," but not surprising.

"I'm just really relieved that it's done with," Haskell said.

Abdulmutallab had written a few court filings in his own hand, including a request to be judged by Islamic law. He at times appeared agitated in court, declaring that Osama bin Laden and al-Awlaki are alive. He also objected to trial testimony from experts would have discussed al-Qaida and martyrdom.

On Tuesday, passengers on Flight 253 testified that Abdulmutallab took a long bathroom break in the plane, during which prosecutors say he was preparing for death.

He took a small bag to the bathroom and was gone 10 to 15 minutes, according to passenger Mike Zantow, the first witness in Abdulmutallab's trial.

"I thought he was freshening up for arrival in Detroit. ... We had less than an hour to go," Zantow said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel said the son of a wealthy Nigerian banker believed his calling that day was martyrdom.

"He was preparing to die and enter heaven," Tukel said. "He purified himself. He washed. He brushed his teeth. He put on perfume."

After returning to his seat, Abdulmutallab pushed a syringe plunger into the chemical bomb, an action that produced a loud "pop" sound, then flames and smoke, the prosecutor said.

"Then all hell broke loose. While the fireball was on him, the defendant sat there. He didn't move. He was expressionless. He was completely blank," Tukel said.

The government says Abdulmutallab willingly explained the plot twice, first to U.S. border officers who took him off the plane and then in more detail to FBI agents who interviewed him at a hospital for 50 minutes, following treatment for serious burns to his groin.

Abdulmutallab told authorities he trained in Yemen, home base for Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, and was influenced by al-Awlaki, who was killed in a Sept. 30 U.S. military air strike.

Following the strike, a U.S. official outlined new details of al-Awlaki's involvement against the U.S., including Abdulmutallab's alleged mission. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said al-Awlaki specifically directed Abdulmutallab to detonate an explosive device over U.S. airspace to maximize casualties.

Officials have said al-Awlaki was believed to be at a gathering of al-Qaida figures in Yemen's Shabwa mountains a day before the attack, after which al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden appeared in a video declaring Abdulmutallab a "hero." Bin Laden was killed in a U.S. raid in Pakistan in May.

Abdulmutallab also has been lauded by al-Qaida's English-language Web magazine Inspire, whose editor was killed along with al-Awlaki.

After the thwarted attack, the Obama administration moved to strengthen U.S. airline security by deploying full-body scanners to try to detect explosives that could be hidden in a passenger's clothing.

Horoscope Pisces Fortunes Prediction

Pisces is the most sensitive sign of the Zodiac, with those born under the sign of the fishes being very susceptible to the thoughts and feelings of those around them. A lack of willpower and an inability to make up their minds means that Pisceans will often suffer an unjust situation rather than stand up for themselves.

You are very imaginative, but your imagination tends to run wild sometimes, giving you great ideas but leaving you, stubborn and indecisive as you are, stuck with decisions that can't be made or in a position that isn't quite right.

Pisces Love Horoscope.
You might be inclined to jump to conclusions at this time, and say and do things which you may regret later. You may suddenly decide to act on some idea or plan you have been considering, which can be good as long as you don't move so abruptly and quickly that you override other people's say in the matter.

Pisces money Horoscope.
You would surely enjoy all the materialistic comforts by the beginning of the year.

You are more prone to spend money without thinking. Dependency on material needs would increase and parallel to this you would plan the future.

Pisces work Horoscope.
You would be more of social person and this would become one of your best assets in the professional life. You would be more determined and aggressive intentions towards achievements of goals. The most common aspects, proofs and realities would pivot your wheel of fortune. Your search of employment and trading would give you a great sense smell for speculations. This is excellent time to prove courage and trust your gut feeling.

Pisces Relationship Horoscope.
You would like to clear all the past life aspects. This might put you in trouble as it is always better to think twice before cutting all the relationships. You should not forget that any bond can be useful to you in future. Try to take a control of your reactions and be a little more sensitive towards you bonds. Look out for making more pleasurable moments in life than taking irrevocable decisions that might destroy the relationships.

(AP) ? A former billionaire described by the government as "the modern face of illegal insider trading" was sentenced Thursday to 11 years in prison, the longest insider trading sentence ever but far short of the two decades sought by prosecutors.

Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam also was fined $10 million and ordered to forfeit $53.8 million by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Holwell, who said he concluded that Rajaratnam made well over $50 million in profits from his illegal trades.

"His crimes and the scope of his crimes reflect a virus in our business culture that needs to be eradicated," Holwell said. "When the integrity of the marketplace is called into question, the public suffers."

The Sri Lanka-born Rajaratnam, 54, was ordered to report to a yet-to-be-designated prison on Nov. 28. His lawyers asked that he be allowed to report to the medical facility at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, where Bernard Madoff is serving his 150-year sentence after admitting to a fraud that cheated thousands of people out of billions of dollars.

The judge gave Rajaratnam leniency, citing his need for a kidney transplant and his advanced diabetes. And he credited Rajaratnam's charity work, which he called "the defendant's responsiveness to and care for the less privileged." The judge cited Rajaratnam's work to help victims of the earthquake in Pakistan and Sept. 11, among others.

Asked if he wished to speak, Rajaratnam said only, "No thank you." He has been a quiet presence at all his court proceedings, declining even to sit at the defense table during his trial. When he stepped off the elevator on the floor of his courtroom Thursday, he was carrying a water bottle and casually asked no one in particular: "Which way?"

The sentencing culminates a series of convictions and sentencings that followed the October 2009 announcement of Rajaratnam's arrest. More than two dozen people were arrested; all were convicted. The other defendants got sentences ranging from a few months to 10 years.

The probe relied heavily on the most extensive use of wiretaps ever for a white-collar case, capturing conversations in which Rajaratnam and his co-conspirators could be heard gleefully celebrating their inside information.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Reed Brodsky told Holwell before the sentence was announced that Rajaratnam made up to $75 million in illegal profits from insider trading he indulged in since at least the late 1990s as he led one of the world's largest hedge funds. The government has said he switched so much money around within his multibillion dollar funds that the movement of price in individual stocks could be traced to his trading whims.

"Today you sentence a man who is the modern face of illegal insider trading," Brodsky told Holwell. "He is arguably the most egregious insider trader to face sentencing in a courthouse in the United States."

The prosecutor said Rajaratnam went about his crime in a "brazen, pervasive and egregious" manner, corrupting at least 20 fellow traders and at least 16 insiders with a lust for the millions of dollars that can flow to anyone who gets an edge in the securities markets. He said at least 19 public companies were victims of his crimes.

"The duration of his crimes was extraordinary," Brodsky said.

Prosecutors had asked Holwell to send Rajaratnam to prison for at least 19? years for his May conviction on securities fraud charges. They said federal sentencing guidelines called for up to 24? years. A Probation Department report recommended a 15-year sentence.

The defense asked for leniency partly based on Rajaratnam's "failing health" and his "unique constellation of ailments."

Attorney Terence Lynam told Holwell that Rajaratnam should receive credit for his considerable charitable works and he urged compassion for his illnesses.

"Any lengthy term of imprisonment will surely shorten his life," he said. "Based on the conduct for which he was convicted, he does not deserve to die in prison."

Lawyers for the Sri Lanka native argued for 6? to 9 years. They said the illegal profits actually total around $7 million, when the trades at his Galleon Group are disregarded.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara recalled telling an audience when he announced charges against Rajaratnam two years ago that the case was a wake-up call for Wall Street.

"We can only hope that this case will be the wake-up call we said it should be," he said in the statement Thursday. "It is a sad conclusion to what once seemed to be a glittering story. ... Privileged professionals do not get a free pass to pursue profit through corrupt means."

In another statement, FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk said Rajaratnam was no different from so many others who claim "superior research and acumen" gave them superior results in the stock markets.

"In fact, as his trial determined, he relied on ? indeed, actively cultivated ? insider information. His considerable fortune was built on a clandestine network of corruption and concealment," she said.

Pakistanis bury militants killed by US (AP)

LAKKI MARWAT, Pakistan ? More then 2,000 mourners including armed men have buried two militants killed alongside a top commander of the militant Haqqani network in an American missile strike.

They were buried Friday in Lakki Marwat, a town just outside the tribal region of North Waziristan, where mourners say they were killed Thursday by the U.S. missile.

Locals identified the two as Maulana Iftikhar and Noor Ali Shah and said both were involved in "jihad."

One of the funerals was attended by armed men who were speaking Arabic.

U.S. officials say the strike also killed Janbaz Zadran, a top commander in the militant Haqqani network blamed for attacks inside Afghanistan.

AP Enterprise: Post-quake inspections can mislead (AP)

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand ? Passing trucks shook the six-story office building constantly in the months after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in September 2010.

"There were quite big cracks, you could see daylight from some offices with outside walls," said receptionist Maryanne Jackson. But, she added, "there was a green sticker on the door that said it was fine."

It wasn't.

The Canterbury Television building collapsed into a smoldering heap when a second major quake struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch five months later. The 115 who died in that building alone accounted for nearly two-thirds of the 181 victims.

The Feb. 22 tragedy has exposed shortcomings in a rapid assessment system that was pioneered in California and is used around the world to determine whether buildings can be reoccupied after major earthquakes.

Inspection reports obtained by The Associated Press under New Zealand public records laws show just how cursory the checks can be.

The problem: People place more faith in the inspections than they should. A green sticker is no indication a building will withstand future quakes, nor does it require a robust analysis of a building's structural health ? something that was misunderstood by both building occupants and public officials in Christchurch.

The experience may serve as a wake-up call for cities from Tokyo to Athens that rely on the system. California officials have told the AP they plan to make improvements after reviewing what happened in Christchurch, and those changes will likely set the tone for the rest of the world.

The rapid-assessment placard system was developed in the 1970s and first used after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area. Officials quickly inspect buildings and assign a red, yellow or green tag to indicate whether people are banned from the building, can gain restricted access or are able to go back to work.

The father of the system, Oakland-based structural engineer Ron Gallagher, said it's often about triage, and officials sometimes make judgment calls based on instinct while trying to juggle assessments of hundreds of buildings. The responsibility for a full inspection, he added, lies with building owners.

On a visit to Christchurch after the February quake, Gallagher found problems.

"We heard from a number of people that when the public viewed a green tag, they thought it meant the building was safe from future earthquakes," he said. "That's not the way the placard system is used, or is meant to be used."

Green stickers were issued to two buildings ? Canterbury Television and Pyne Gould Corporation ? after the September quake based on limited examinations, according to the inspection reports obtained by the AP.

At the Pyne Gould building, where 18 died in February, inspectors came by the day after the earlier quake, but never went inside. Time stamps on the records indicate the examination may have lasted as little as two minutes. The report consisted only of a few checked boxes and a one-word summary: "OK."

Inspectors did go inside the CTV building, as Canterbury Television was commonly known. But they didn't tear back walls to assess the damage, commission engineering reports or look at building plans.

The inspection lasted 69 minutes and generated a brief summary: "Looked at by 3 CCC (Christchurch City Council) senior officials. Interviewed manager ? no issues (signaled) by users of building."

Officials ticked a box indicating they estimated damage to the building at between zero and 1 percent. They placed the green sticker on the front door. And they moved on to the next building.

Comments made after the February disaster indicate how much trust was placed in these rapid assessments. For instance, Christchurch Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button told The Australian newspaper that the CTV building had been "inspected by our engineers and declared safe."

Representatives from both buildings told the AP that after the first quake, they commissioned engineering examinations, which concluded the buildings were sound. They wouldn't let the AP review copies of the reports.

The owners of the CTV building said minor repairs were recommended, and they weren't complete at the time the disaster struck.

Survivors of the collapse said they think the building was noticeably shakier after the first quake.

"All the girls lived in fear of that building," Jackson said.

One colleague took to leaving open the fire escape door, even on cold days, in hopes she would be able to get out quickly in another quake, Jackson said. The woman ? and most others ? didn't.

Jackson was lucky. She was standing near her desk when she felt the floor beneath her roll and saw the windows flexing. She ran out the front door and across the street, all the time hearing what she recalls as a "terrible" crashing noise. When she turned around, everything but the elevator shaft had collapsed.

Another survivor, Ron Godkin, said he felt intense shaking when a neighboring building was demolished following the September quake. "We all had concerns about it," he said. "You couldn't distinguish between the shudders and the earthquakes."

The New Zealand government has launched several probes into the disaster, including one on the CTV collapse.

Christchurch officials declined to comment. In a letter to the AP, a lawyer for the city said Christchurch doesn't want to pre-empt the official investigations "and for this reason does not intend to provide any interpretation or explanation of the material" in its inspection reports.

The attorney added that any records provided by the city may not be complete, because the disaster has left some records inaccessible.

Gallagher said the problems described by survivors ? exterior cracks and excessive shaking ? are indications that something was wrong with the CTV building after September.

He has his own theory about why the building collapsed. He said it likely didn't have enough steel reinforcement in the concrete columns and column ties, and that a poor configuration allowed torsion on one side of the building but not the other. In the February quake, that would have led to joint failure and the building falling under its own weight, he said.

Jim Barnes, who oversees the placard system for the California Emergency Management Agency, also visited Christchurch after the disaster. He said his agency is planning changes based on what was learned in Christchurch.

"We have not noticed this sort of misunderstanding with the 'Inspected' tag before, but now that it has come to light, we can see how it could happen," he wrote in an email.

Gallagher is writing a report, due out in January, on what Americans can learn from Christchurch.

He said one major finding will be the need to get information to building owners and occupants, in the form of printed literature, about what a red tag or a green tag means and the next steps they will need to take.

Dr. Maysoon Abbas, who died in the CTV collapse, was so worried about the building that she was looking for a medical job elsewhere, said her husband Maan Alkaisi.

"Sometimes it's instinct. Something was telling her 'Don't stay in that place.' That makes me really very sad," he said. "She was feeling that something was wrong. But obviously, she's not an engineer."

Do It Yourself Home Security

Installing?Your Own Home Security System

DIY Home Security System InstallationWhen it comes to home alarm systems, making the decision over which do it yourself security system to install in your home is a significant one. There are currently a wide variety of alarm choices on the market each offering a number of advantages over each other. In this article we will discuss a number of self-install alarm system choices and the benefits and drawbacks of each.

Why Choose a Self-Install Alarm System?

No Strangers in Your Home

When it comes to home security making the choice to have an alarm system is a significant factor in keeping your home and your possessions safe. While a number of families choose to go with large alarm system companies who install their systems (often free of charge,) some families opt instead to go with self installation alarm systems. Most DIY home security systems are relatively easy to install for anyone with home improvement experience and many of these systems come with the added benefit of being manufactured by a large home security corporation. Ease of installation alone is not a significant reason to choose a self installed home alarm system but it does offer a reduction in out of pocket expense in some cases. Deciding to self install a home alarm system also offers peace of mind for homeowners who do not feel comfortable allowing contracted workers of the home alarm company in to their home. The contracted workers that install home alarm systems may be background checked by the companies that they work for but there is always a possibility that inviting a stranger in to your home could result in trouble.

Affordable Customized Home Security Systems

One of the most significant benefits in installing a DIY home security system is the ability to customize every aspect of your system to your individual needs. While many home security companies offer a wide array of features on their home alarm systems customizing your own system can help to ensure that you feel confident in how well your home is protected. Choosing to go with installing your own customized alarm system can also help to reduce the cost involved with adding multiple ?extra? features to your home security lineup.

No Pressure Purchasing

Another added bonus of choosing to install your own security system is the lack of pressure when it comes to choosing the right system for your home. Oftentimes families feel pressured when a home security representative visits their home to suggest a professionally installed security system. While it is important to maintain a secure home, not all families can afford the top of the line alarm systems pushed by home security representatives and this can often lead to guilt and overspending. No one likes to feel as though they are ?being cheap? or not protecting their family with a top of the line security system and choosing to install a self-install alarm system avoids this all together.

High Quality Products

One thing that many people are concerned about when they are deciding whether or not to install their own home alarm system is the quality of the product that they are choosing. A common misconception is that DIY home security systems are inferior to professionally installed home alarm systems ? this is simply not true. In fact a number of the self install home alarm systems that will be covered in this article are produced by the same big companies that do professionally installed systems. These security companies have come to realize that professionally installed systems are not for everyone and in an effort to maintain business they have begun to offer a selection of self installed systems as well. The quality of these self installation systems rarely differs in comparison to professionally installed systems, particularly when produced by the same manufacturer.

Availability of Guidance during Installation

Another aspect of self installation of a home security system that concerns many homeowners is the availability of guidance during the installation process. Many individuals who feel confident in their home improvement and ?do it yourself? skills at the initial stages of installation may soon find that they are not as confident as they believed themselves to be towards the latter stages of installation. In order to avoid this some choose to go with a professionally installed security system; however, there are a significant number of resources to assist those who decide to go with self installation. The primary source of assistance during the installation process is generally the manufacturing company. A large portion of manufacturing companies provide a ?FAQ? packet as well as contact information for any questions that may arise during the installation of their home alarm system. In addition there are also many online resources that can be helpful with the installation process. Lastly any local handyman or home improvement or home security store employee can offer help in a pinch but for the most part manufacturing companies make customer support a priority when it comes to their systems.

Deciding which DIY home security System is Right for You

Installing Fire AlarmDeciding which self-install security system is the right choice for you can feel overwhelming due to the sheer number of systems that are currently available. While everyone would like to be able to go with the top of the line system for their home the truth is that this is not always financially feasible and so it is important to be able to find an affordable, yet quality home security product.

Pujols sparks Cards to rout

St. Louis star goes 4-for-5 with home run, 5 RBIs as Cards even series

updated 11:57 p.m. ET Oct. 10, 2011

MILWAUKEE - Your turn, Albert Pujols.

The St. Louis slugger had one of the biggest postseason nights of his career in Game 2 of the NL championship series, going 4 for 5 with a home run, three doubles and five RBIs to lead the Cardinals past the Milwaukee Brewers 12-3 on Monday.

Pujols belted a two-run homer in the first, a two-run double in the third and an RBI double in the fifth, then added another double in the seventh. The crowd cheered sarcastically when the Brewers finally retired him in the eighth.

"Sometimes when they come, they come in a bunch," Pujols said.

His big hits came one night after Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder bashed the Brewers to a 9-6, come-from-behind victory in Game 1.

This time, the big bats couldn't bring Milwaukee back ? even at Miller Park. The best home team in the majors all season, the Brewers had won all four home games in the playoffs until Monday.

The series now shifts to St. Louis, where Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter faces Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo in Game 3 on Wednesday night.

Pujols can become a free agent after the World Series, so a big postseason could raise his price. The three-time NL MVP was 1 for 4 in Sunday night's loss, hitting into a double play with runners on first and third in the seventh inning. A run scored on the play, but it seemed to be an indication that Pujols wasn't quite on his game. He came into Monday with only one RBI in the Cardinals' first six postseason games.

"You learn from the mistakes that you made," Pujols said. "Yesterday was just so tough. Going to bed, I was just thinking about some of the opportunities I had to help our ballclub win. I turned that page, knowing today was a new day."

But he struck a confident tone when asked about his struggles after Sunday night's loss, saying "Tomorrow I can come and blow it out, and what are you going to say tomorrow?"

Blow it out, he did.

"The last time we saw them at their place he was swinging the bat just like this," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "You can't make mistakes to him. You have to hit spots. You have to keep it down in the zone. He doesn't miss too many mistakes."

Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Milwaukee, then was involved in a disputed play in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Weeks grounded into a double play, though replays showed he was safe.

Weeks ? hobbled by the lingering effects of a midseason left ankle injury ? appeared to beat the throw to first base and seemed upset when he was called out.

"Big part in the game, whether he's safe or out," Roenicke said. "You guys saw the replay. That was a big play."

But it didn't matter much after the Brewers gave up four runs in a backbreaking seventh inning. Fielder homered in the eighth, well after the outcome had been decided.

Cardinals starter Edwin Jackson went 4 1-3 innings, giving up Weeks' home run. Lance Lynn got the win.

It was a short and ugly start by Milwaukee's Shaun Marcum, who gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings and took the loss. Marcum, obtained in an offseason trade with Toronto, struggled mightily in the final month of the season. After a rough outing in Game 3 of the NL division series against Arizona, his place in the Brewers' postseason rotation might come into question.

"We'll see how it goes," Roenicke said, adding later: "As far as I'm concerned right now he's pitching again."

St. Louis got started early when Jon Jay bunted for a one-out hit in the first. Pujols came to the plate and delivered what amounted to a warning shot, hitting a long fly just foul. Then he zeroed in on Marcum's offering, smacking it to left field for a home run.

Pujols stood at the plate and admired his shot for a moment, flipped his bat away and trotted around the bases.

"I've seen Albert like this before," Roenicke said. "He's a great offensive player. He's a heads-up defensive player. He's a heads-up baserunner. This is a great baseball player."

St. Louis added two more runs in the third. Jackson's single fell in when center fielder Nyjer Morgan got a bad break on the ball, tried to make a diving catch and then dropped it. With one out, Jay sneaked a single down the third-base line, again setting the stage for Pujols.

Pujols hammered a pitch deep to center, Morgan missed a chance at what would have been an acrobatic catch, and two runs scored to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. Pujols pointed to the sky upon arriving at second base, then clapped his hands.

"Heck, you know at some point he's going to assert himself," teammate Lance Berkman said. "Certainly tonight that was the case. He got some good pitches to hit and he crushed them."

The Cardinals added another run in the fourth. Yadier Molina doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored when Nick Punto dribbled a single up the middle with the infield in to give St. Louis a 5-0 lead.

Milwaukee finally got to Jackson in the fourth, when Fielder led off with a double and Weeks hit a two-run shot to left to cut the Cardinals' lead to 5-2. A one-out single by Yuniesky Betancourt threatened to keep the rally going, but Jonathan Lucroy grounded into a forceout and Casey McGehee tapped back to the pitcher to end the inning.

Brewers reliever Marco Estrada took over in the fifth, but the Cardinals kept on swinging.

Jay led off with a double and Pujols laced a ball into the gap in right-center for an RBI double. Pujols advanced to third on a groundout, then scored when a ball slipped through Lucroy's legs for a wild pitch. Lucroy found the ball and made a quick throw to Estrada at the plate, but it wasn't in time.

"The bullpen didn't do so well, either," Roenicke said. "We didn't pitch well today."

Milwaukee put runners on second and third after a walk and a one-out double by Braun in the fifth, chasing Jackson. Arthur Rhodes walked Fielder to load the bases and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa made another pitching change, bringing in Lynn, who got Weeks to ground into the disputed double play.

Things fell apart completely for the Brewers in a four-run seventh. Pujols led off with a double and Matt Holliday, Molina, David Freese and Punto delivered RBI singles.

Freese homered in the ninth, his second of the series.

NOTES: Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers attended the game, getting a huge cheer from the crowd when he was shown on the stadium video board in the middle of the second inning. Rodgers has developed a friendship with Braun. ... A foul popup dropped between Pujols and Molina in the second inning, leaving them staring blankly at each other. ... Attendance was 43,937.

Wall Street protests draw overseas attention (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Occupy Wall Street movement, which has spawned grass-roots activities around the U.S. and prompted comments from President Barack Obama, is now drawing political remarks from overseas.

Iran's top leader said Wednesday that the wave of protests reflects a serious crisis that will ultimately topple capitalism in America. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed the United States is now in a full-blown crisis because its "corrupt foundation has been exposed to the American people."

The remarks came a day after U.S. officials said the Obama administration plans to leverage charges that Iran plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador into a new global campaign to isolate the Islamic republic.

For the past 3 1/2 weeks, the economic protesters have besieged a park in lower Manhattan near Wall Street. A march on Tuesday, past the homes of wealthy residents, marked the first time the movement has singled out individuals as part of the 1 percent they say are getting rich at the expense of the rest of America.

More activities were planned Wednesday. In Ohio, the group Occupy Cincinnati was staging a march.

Protesters in New York planned to gather at the headquarters of JP Morgan Chase, where they'll continue to decry the expiration of the state's 2 percent "millionaires' tax" in December.

Meanwhile, the lawyer for a woman pepper sprayed during an action last month is demanding that the Manhattan district attorney prosecute an NYPD deputy inspector on an assault charge. Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the matter is being investigated by police internal affairs and the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

Despite the onset of cold weather, protesters have indicated they're in it for the long haul.

Occupy Seattle demonstrators sent the mayor a list of demands, including approval for large tents to be used as a kitchen, infirmary, storage area and information center ? and written approval of long-term occupancy.

In Washington, six people were arrested Tuesday for demonstrating inside a Senate office building. More than 125 protesters in Boston were arrested after they ignored warnings to move from a downtown green space, police said.

The New York state comptroller has issued a report showing that Wall Street is again losing jobs because of global economic woes. The job losses threaten tax revenue for a city and state heavily reliant on the financial industry.

The industry shed 4,100 jobs in the late spring and summer and could lose nearly 10,000 more by the end of 2012, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said. That would bring the total industry loss to 32,000 positions since the financial meltdown of 2008.

The sector employed 166,600 people in investment banks, securities trading firms and hedge funds as of August.

Christopher Guerra, an artist and Occupy Wall Street protester from Newark, N.J., said the job losses aid the protesters' cause.

"That means more people on our side," Guerra said. "The companies are destroying this country by helping themselves, not the people, and pushing jobs out of America. If they get shafted, they will realize that what we are saying is true."
