Romney criticized for remark about Medicaid (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Mitt Romney opened himself up to criticism Friday by saying he didn't understand Medicaid until he started working in government. The Republican presidential candidate later tried to clarify the comment, but Democrats had already pounced, saying his words were further proof that the multimillionaire businessman is out of touch.

"You wonder what Medicaid is, those that aren't into all this government stuff. You know, I have to admit. I didn't know all the differences between these things before I got into government," Romney told voters at a campaign event. "Then I got into it and understood that Medicaid is the health care program for the poor, by and large."

Medicaid is a federal-state health care program for the poor and disabled.

Romney tried later to clarify what he meant, telling reporters traveling with him to South Carolina that he understood the program but didn't quite grasp how it was funded. He called his earlier comment a "self-deprecating understatement."

Democrats said the comment showed Romney doesn't understand working-class people.

"One has to wonder how Mitt Romney thinks he can represent American workers, their families and seniors when his concern for the poor and the middle class comes across like an afterthought," Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

Romney, who was in his late 40s when he ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 1994, told reporters that his prior work for a health care consulting company taught him how important Medicaid and Medicare, a health care program for seniors, are to hospitals.

Coach sends an ally packing on 'Survivor'

Divine intervention and/or incredible self-delusion and/or good strategy sent Brandon Hantz to Redemption Island on Survivor South Pacific, as Ben ?Coach? Wade turned on his ally after Brandon shockingly gave up immunity during Tribal Council. That sends us into Sunday?s finale with Brandon facing off against Ozzy Lusth during the final Redemption Island duel, and Coach, Sophie Clarke, Albert Destrade, and Rick ?Who?? Nelson as our final five.

Before we get into the crazy events of the episode, a disclaimer: I let God write this recap, so no don?t even think of blaming me for anything you don?t like about it. Actually, Coach?s strategy of telling Brandon that he was voting him out because God told him to was pretty genius?except I?d bet Coach believes that 100 percent. It?s odd, isn?t it, how if you hear voices, you?re crazy, unless you say that voice is a higher power?

First, at the duel, Edna didn?t almost beat Ozzy; the preview tried to get us to believe she?d defeat him, but of course, since the preview suggested that, we knew it was likely a fake-out. Edna lost even though, as Jeff Probst pointed out during the duel, there was ?an entire tribe working on this duel? because they ?so desperately don?t want Ozzy back in.?

Back at camp, Sophie nicknamed Redemption Island ?Ozzy?s Pleasure Dome,? and pointed out that he?s been poisoning the jury, comforting and feeding each person before sending them to the jury after winning a duel. Although Albert approached Coach about voting out Sophie, because Albert always thinks his dumb plans are the best move possible, Coach and Sophie wanted to send Brandon to Ozzy?s Pleasure Dome, and the editors kept including Brandon foreshadowing his exit: ?This is fate. We?re in God?s hands,? ?God?s got everything under control.?

Brandon twice walked in on conversations about the tribe?s plan to vote him out?twice! The second was the most incredible, as Coach was doing a on-the-fly interview (when a producer pulls a contestant/cast member aside and asks a question about something that just happened in the moment, instead of later during an interview), and Brandon just walked up behind him.

Coach was talking about being annoyed at Brandon, mostly because Brandon figured out that Coach was talking about voting him out because Brandon had become too sane and likable post-merge. ?Come on, man. Don?t sound like Russell,? Coach told Brandon, adding ?you say that?s not what we?re thinking about? even though Brandon knew exactly what they were talking about. But thankfully, they hugged it out (Brandon pleaded: ?Please give me a hug man?), and Coach told us in the start of his on-the-fly: ?The apple never falls far from the tree.?

But the apple won immunity, though he credited God, who we can thank for making the episode even more interesting, because his win threw the tribe into chaos. Rick, worst cast member ever, full of pizza that Brandon won as reward and shared with him (Brandon called Rick ?Cowboy??he has a nickname?!) exploded on Albert, telling everyone that Albert wanted to send Sophie home. Earlier, Rick and Albert talked about this, and about going to the final two together, and Rick said, ?I haven?t changed anything.? No shit, you haven?t even been on the island for most of the season.

Coach said, ?I believe in divine intervention,? and suggested God wanted to save Brandon, hence his immunity challenge win. But then Brandon told Coach, ?You know by now that God speaks to me,? and said they had to forgive Albert and stick with him, and thus vote off Sophie, and Brandon was so convinced that he had to forgive Albert that he decided to give his individual immunity to Albert.

And that?s exactly what he did, right at the start of Tribal Council. Albert, being sane and rational, did not give it back, saying he?d give it back if he knew Brandon was in trouble. Albert did cast the only other vote for Sophie, perhaps as a way of trying to win Brandon?s favor as a jury member.

Coach knew he was the swing vote, so he did what any logical, sane person would do: waited for the voices in his head to tell him what to do. ?I will do whatever God tells me to do,? he said. ?I begged God to speak to me like he?s never spoken to me before.? One name came down from upon high repeatedly, and that left Coach ?at complete peace,? he said before casting his swing vote to send Brandon home.

?It?s God?s will. Go win Redemption,? Coach whispered to Brandon as he hugged Coach. And with that, Mark Burnett got two seasons of Redemption Island actually being about religious redemption, alienating a bunch of Survivor fans in the process but giving Jesus a nice pre-birthday present that I?m sure Jesus will pay back by helping Burnett sell his Todd Palin reality show.

"Barefoot Bandit" sentenced to more than 7 years (Reuters)

COUPEVILLE, Wash (Reuters) ? A Washington state man dubbed the "Barefoot Bandit," who staged a sensational two-year, multi-state crime spree, pleaded guilty on Friday and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Colton Harris-Moore, who earned his nickname by carrying out a string of thefts and burglaries sometimes in bare feet, was sentenced to 87 months.

During a daylong hearing the 20-year-old self-taught airplane pilot pleaded guilty to 32 charges, including residential burglary and attempting to elude police.

To an additional charge of gun theft, Harris-Moore entered an Alford plea, in which a defendant asserts innocence of a crime but the court treats it as a guilty plea. Judge Vickie Churchill said that, with his plea, he was considered guilty on all the charges.

"This case is a tragedy but it's also a triumph in the human spirit," Churchill said, referring to his difficult childhood that she said was "little better than a dog's."

Harris-Moore still awaits sentencing in U.S. District Court in Seattle after pleading guilty in June to seven federal charges that carry a maximum 78-month term.

'AN EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG MAN'

His attorney, John Henry Browne, said the state and federal sentences would run concurrently, meaning that with credit for good behavior he could be released by his 26th birthday.

"He's an extraordinary young man; it's amazing he survived. He's painfully shy," Browne said.

"My childhood was one that I would not wish on my darkest enemies," Harris-Moore said in a letter to the court. "I wish not to point fingers or enumerate through the gamut of issues, however, my thirst for knowledge cries for help, and coming of age was met with inept parents suffering from drugs and alcohol."

Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks said he was aware of Harris-Moore's difficult childhood but said he displayed a "brazen disrespect for the law" and deserved time behind bars.

The hearing caps months of negotiations between prosecutors and attorneys for the high school dropout, who stayed one step ahead of the law as he broke into homes and stole cars, boats and planes across nine states and British Columbia.

He was captured in the Bahamas in July 2010 after crash-landing a stolen aircraft he had flown from Indiana.

As part of his plea agreement, Harris-Moore forfeited profits from the rights to his life story. He has signed a movie deal with 20th Century Fox earmarking $1.3 million in proceeds as restitution to his victims.

PFT: Steelers' Harrison won't change how he plays

Arizona Cardinals v Minnesota VikingsGetty Images

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says he wants to keep the Bills in New York, but he?s not ready to commit $100 million in taxpayer money to upgrade Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Said Tony Sparano after being fired as coach of the Dolphins, ?I can?t say enough about our players ? I love and appreciate them all and I value the effort they gave me from the very first moment I walked in the door. They practiced and played hard every day, and always put the success of the team ahead of themselves. It was a joy to work with these special men, and no one can ask for more than what they gave me. For this they will always have my gratitude, and I am proud to have coached them.?

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a stoic approach to preparing for Tebowmania: ?We?ll definitely look at that, how [Tebow] plays in the second half, relative to the first half. How much do they repeat the same thing, how much do they change? How much do they adjust the game plan? We?ll definitely study that, the end-of-the-game sequences.?

The New York Post brings up the subject of Peyton Manning becoming a Jet, just to brush it off as ridiculous.

Said Ravens RB Ricky Williams, ?There?s times when I wake up and I feel energetic and I feel like I?m 25 again. But in reality, I?m 34, and for me, to have the opportunity to still play in this league, that a team still wants me on their roster, that?s what?s good. To land on a good team with a lot of veteran leadership and a great organization, I really feel fortunate.?

Bengals QB Andy Dalton is doing good in the community.

Said Browns TE Evan Moore of the Colt McCoy concussion controversy, ?There?s a lot of things that we as players and the league itself could brainstorm to try to avoid these situations that might arise. There?s no question people need to get together and discuss ways to improve the system.?

The Steelers have several important players dealing with injuries as they prepare for the 49ers.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips believes he?s deserving of another head coaching job.

The Colts can clinch the first pick in the NFL draft on Sunday.

Jacksonville may need to make a change at kicker.

The Titans have placed MLB Barrett Ruud on injured reserve and signed LB Kevin Malast to the active roster.

The Broncos credit locker room chemistry to the way the team rallies around each other in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt insists that his team has a solid foundation and a bright future.

Raiders LB Rolando McClain spoke with the media about his recent arrest just long enough to say, ?I won?t comment on it. I haven?t and I won?t. It is what is. No comment.?

Chargers LB Antwan Barnes says that when he played for Rex Ryan, Ryan would tell him, ?Be impenetrable like the skin of an armadillo.? But Barnes adds, ?To be honest, I didn?t even know what an armadillo was.?

Cowboys LB Bradie James says the season is on the brink.

Giants WR Victor Cruz has come a long way to become one of the top receivers in the league.

For Eagles RB LeSean McCoy, a great individual season is being lost amid a terrible season for the team.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says QB Rex Grossman is auditioning for next season.

The Bears have learned the hard way that they?re lacking depth at key positions.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz is singling out DT Sammie Hill for playing well while Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley were out.

How will the Packers deal with the absence of WR Greg Jennings?

Christian Ponder remains the Vikings? starting quarterback, even after a game when Joe Webb replaced him and put up better numbers.

Said Falcons QB Matt Ryan of coach Mike Smith?s health scare, ?It?s scary because, obviously before anything, we?re all people and you develop relationships and you get to know somebody and you really care about them. So, obviously, in that situation, you?re nervous. You just are. You don?t like for those kind of things to happen.?

The Panthers are working on reducing penalties.

Saints QB Drew Brees made an appearance on Sesame Street.

Bucs DT Gerald McCoy is ahead of schedule on rehabbing his biceps injury.

Said Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt of WR Larry Fitzgerald, ?You are almost running out of things to say about Larry because of what he brings to the table.?

The red zone has been a rough place for the Rams.

The 49ers? fullbacks say they?re just fine with RB Frank Gore getting all the credit in the running game.

Pete Carroll says he?s not thinking about the playoff scenarios, but with three more wins Seattle could get there.

WikiLeaks' chief in vital extradition court fight

(AP) ? Julian Assange is making what could be a last throw of the legal dice in his battle to avoid extradition to Sweden over sex crimes allegations.

On Monday the WikiLeaks founder will ask judges to let him take his case to Britain's Supreme Court. If they say no, he could be on a plane to Stockholm within days.

The 40-year-old Australian behind the secret-spilling website has spent almost a year on bail in Britain fighting extradition for questioning over claims of rape and molestation made by two Swedish women. So far, two courts have ruled against him.

For his case to be considered by Britain's Supreme Court, Assange's lawyers must persuade two High Court judges that it raises a question of "general public importance."

According to a website devoted to arguing Assange's case, his lawyers will seek to argue two points ? that the European arrest warrant for Assange is invalid because it was not issued by the correct authority, and that he should not be extradited because he has not been charged with any crime.

Lower courts have already considered and rejected both arguments.

Assange's hearing on Monday will come on the same day as a parliamentary debate on Britain's extradition rules. The House of Commons will debate and vote on demands to change extradition agreements that require Britain to transfer individuals to the U.S. and Europe ? sometimes on insufficient evidence, critics say.

Assange declined to discuss his case, but told The Associated Press he was heartened that lawmakers are tackling the issue of extraditions.

"What we ask for is humble ? the right to not be shipped off to foreign lands without formal charges or the presentation of even the most basic evidence," he told the AP in an email.

A district judge ruled in February that Assange could be extradited, and the High Court upheld that decision last month, saying the alleged offenses amounted to crimes under British law and ruling that the arrest warrant had been properly issued.

If Assange is granted a Supreme Court appeal, his stay in Britain ? where he lives under curfew at an affluent supporter's rural mansion ? is likely to last for many more months.

If he is denied, his legal fight will move to Sweden. Last month Assange replaced his Swedish lawyer with two high-profile attorneys, Per E. Samuelson and Thomas Olsson. Samuelson has a long track-record as a defense lawyer in sex crime cases and has also represented one of the men behind file-sharing website The Pirate Bay.

The allegations against Assange stem from a visit to Sweden in August 2010, shortly after WikiLeaks released secret U.S. files from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange became involved with two women, one of whom later accused him of coercion and molestation. The other alleged that he had sex with her as she slept.

Swedish prosecutors have not charged Assange with any crime, but have demanded that he return to Scandinavia to face questions.

He denies wrongdoing and says the sex was consensual. He has insisted the sex crimes investigation is politically motivated by opponents of his organization.

Assange has become a global figure since WikiLeaks began releasing secret government documents, including hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables from U.S. missions around the world.

Vilified by U.S. authorities and other governments angry about their secrets being leaked, he has been hailed as a free-speech hero by many around the world.

But his expensive legal troubles ? and moves by U.S. financial companies to block donations to the site ? have taken a financial toll on WikiLeaks, which has been forced to suspend publishing to focus on fundraising. Assange has said the organization needs $3.5 million to keep it going into 2013.

Assange also faces potential legal action in the U.S., where prosecutors are weighing criminal charges, and where he could be dragged into the case of Bradley Manning, a U.S. Army analyst suspected of disclosing secret intelligence to WikiLeaks.

Manning remains in custody at Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas. A military court hearing to decide whether he will stand trial is due to begin Dec. 16.
