Chitika: iPhone usage share drops almost 5% in December as Samsung, HTC gain

Usage of Apple?s iPhone slid more than 4 percent in December despite what analysts estimate will have been a huge month in Apple?s biggest-ever quarter of sales. Advertising network Chitika on Friday published its smartphone vendor usage share data for the month of December as measured by traffic across its network. Apple?s iPhone showed the biggest slide last month but Apple was still the most popular vendor by a wide margin with a 49.62% share. Chitika also recently reported that iOS?s overall operating system share was up 1.12% in December. HTC?s vendor share followed at 16.83%, up 1% from November, and Samsung jumped 2.74% to 14.53% in the No.3 spot. Motorola was nearly flat at 7.94% and RIM slid half a point to 0.99%. Charts detailing Chitika?s data follow below.

OK, it all makes sense now. Here's how it went down... The suave playboy of the western world is feeling very pleased with himself, having picked up another lady today who even seems classy. So he's getting ready to party, steps out to pick up coffee, because he figures maybe it's a long night ahead, he got to get stoked, whatever, maybe he thinks when he comes back, she's gonna be waiting for him in her lingerie, or maybe even less, and then suddenly he realizes that the sole reason she was accompanying him was to investigate him. To dish some dirt about the truth in the Natalie Holloway case. Not only was he getting nothing tonight, but his next stop might be a jail cell! He probably snapped at that point because he never thought he could get in trouble here.

Sad for her, but what was she thinking? Why couldn't she get a little backup? Even if it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, couldn't she have contacted someone via cellphone in the ladies' room? I don't get it...

Surprising there's no capital punishment there. Is it a Catholic thing? I always thought Peru was a really tough place...

Syria: Authorities Release 552 Prisoners Accused Of Anti-Regime Activities

BEIRUT -- Syria's state-run TV says authorities have released 552 prisoners who were involved in anti-regime activities during the nine-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.

It is the second group of prisoners to be released in a week under an Arab League plan meant to stop the government's crackdown on dissent, which has claimed thousands of lives. Besides halting the violence, the plan calls for the release of all political prisoners. About 3,500 were freed on Tuesday.

Following Thursday's TV report, activists said Syria was still holding at least 25,000 political detainees.

The Arab plan so far has failed to stop the violence. Activists have reported several hundred deaths even while a team of Arab League monitors is on the ground in Syria in an attempt to ensure the regime's compliance.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists accused the Syrian regime Wednesday of misleading Arab League observers by taking them to areas loyal to the government, changing street signs to confuse them and sending regime supporters into rebellious neighborhoods to give false testimony.

The monthlong observer mission, which started Dec. 27, offers a rare outside glimpse into a country where a government crackdown on a 9-month-old uprising has killed more than 5,000 people. But there are fears Assad loyalists have corrupted the observer process beyond repair.

There was no immediate comment from the Arab League. But Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi denied the allegations.

"We don't interfere in the mission's job," Makdissi told The Associated Press, adding that government escorts are necessary to protect the observers.

Activists also said regime loyalists are painting military vehicles blue to make them look like police vehicles ? a ploy that allows the government to claim it has pulled the army out of heavily populated areas in accordance with the Arab League plan that was supposed to end the government's crackdown on dissent.

The plan requires the government to remove security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and free political prisoners. Syria agreed to it on Dec. 19, paving the way for the observers to enter. About 100 monitors are in the country now to assess whether the regime is complying.

But the Arab League has acknowledged that killings have gone on, even with the observers on the ground. Activists put the death toll at more than 400 people since Dec. 21.

As the observers continued their work on Wednesday, security forces and pro-government gunmen shot dead at least 12 people, nine of them in central Homs province, activist groups said.

The secretary-general of the Arab League, Nabil Elaraby, told reporters in Cairo that the League will not cut short the observers mission in Syria. An Arab diplomat said Tuesday that the 22-member organization would consider pulling out of Syria because the killings were continuing despite the observers' presence.

"Our mission is important and we made a commitment before the Syrian regime" to carry it out, Elaraby said. "We will continue the one-month mission, and in this month we will accomplish many things, but for now we are hoping to assess the situation."

The League has claimed some victories for the monitors, including the withdrawal of heavy weapons from cities and release of thousands of prisoners.

But Syria has banned most foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting, making it difficult to verify any claims from either side.

Interviews with activists and eyewitnesses over the past week indicate there have been clear signs of interference with the mission.

"The observers are going to areas known to be loyal to the regime," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Another activist, Syria-based Mustafa Osso said the regime is mostly taking the observers to calm areas and changing street signs so that the monitors go to the wrong neighborhoods.

"Since the mission started the regime is limiting their (observers') movements and when they go out they are under the protection and supervision" of Syrian security, he said.

A resident of Homs, which has been one of the main centers of opposition to the regime, said buses carrying dozens regime supporters arrived in his neighborhood of Khaldiyeh last week shortly before the observers arrived. The crowds pretended they were residents and gave testimonials to the observers, said the resident, who witnessed the scene.

"All this happened as the monitors' Syrian escorts prevented the real residents from reaching the observers," said the man, who asked that his name not be published for fear of reprisals. He added that the observers set up an office in a school in a pro-regime neighborhood, which meant nobody dared go to the office to tell of their experiences.

The Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella group of activists, said the management at the Homs Central Prison tried to trick four League observers who were there to interview political detainees. According to the LCC, the observers were brought instead to the wing where drug convicts are held.

"The political detainees protested and chanted for the regime's ouster, (and) the observers heard them and entered their cells and got information about each of them, his name and why he has been arrested," the LCC said in a statement.

Opposition groups have been deeply critical of the Arab League mission, saying it is simply giving Assad cover for his crackdown. The LCC

The observer mission's Sudanese chief, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, has raised particular concern because he served in key security positions under Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted for crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Critics also say the mission is far too small ? and too dependent on government escorts ? to be effective. The regime says the escorts are vital to the monitors' personal safety.

The government has long contended that the turmoil in Syria this year is not an uprising by reform-seekers but the work of terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs ? a contention most international observers dismiss as an attempt by an autocratic regime to terrify its citizens into abandoning the revolt.

The monitoring mission will issue its first findings Sunday during a meeting in Cairo, where the Arab League is based.

Arab League official Adnan al-Khudeir, who heads the operations room that the monitors report to, said this week that initial reports indicate "noticeable progress."

Breakthrough Facility to Trap Solar Energy in Molten Salt

/energy/article/43801

One of the greatest problems of large scale solar power facilities is that they do not produce electricity at night, and when they do produce power, it is constantly fluctuating with the sun's strength. Under development in the deserts of Tonopah, Nevada is a new technology that will effectively store solar energy in the form of molten salt. When the sun goes down, thermal energy from the salt will be able to produce electricity for eight to ten hours.

The new facility, known as the SolarReserve Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant, is expected to be operational by 2013. Rather than directly converting sunlight to electricity through photovoltaic panels, it will utilize solar thermal. A vast array of mirrors will direct concentrated sunlight to a single point to boil water which will then power a steam turbine. The boiling water will also be used to heat salt which has the capacity to store energy.

Another company, BrightSource, is planning to build three more similar facilities in California, expected to be operational in 2016 and 2017. The SolarReserve plant will produce 110 megawatts at its peak and then store energy for the night. Combined with the three BrightSource plants, they can power tens of thousands of southwestern households through the summer evening, a time when air conditioners are most active.

The technology is still very new, and it is unclear as to whether it will be widely adopted. That will most likely depend on the results of the initial SolarReserve Plant. However, some very large companies are starting to invest in it, such as Google, Chevron, and Good Energies. Electric utilities have already signed up to deliver its power such as NV Energy and Southern California Edison, which are looking to expand their renewable energy portfolio.

The US Department of Energy is also taking notice. In September, it gave the company a loan guarantee of $737 million for its new Nevada facility. This is despite the recent controversy over the Energy Department's $535 million loan guarantee to now bankrupt solar panel manufacturer, Solyndra. The difference is that the Nevada plant will actually produce energy, and Solyndra only produced goods that were presold by contract.

The best thing going for the SolarReserve plant is that it has the potential to solve a primary reason not to invest in solar, its unreliability and inability to produce power at night. According to Kevin B. Smith, chief executive of SolarReserve, "As we move forward, we'll get more and more traction with the fact we can provide more capacity."

Next Ford F-Series to rely on aluminum body parts

Aluminum body panels were once reserved for high-dollar sports cars, but the next-generation of Ford ?s F-Series trucks will reportedly use the lightweight material in order to comply with stricter fuel economy regulations.

According to sources familiar with the project, Ford ?s next-generation of F-Series pickup trucks will utilize aluminum for most its body panels, including doors and fenders. The next-generation F-Series ? dubbed P552 ? is scheduled to launch in 2014.

Ford isn?t commenting on the rumors, but the move would keep in line with the company?s overall strategy of reducing vehicle weight by up to 700 pounds by 2019.

?We know our customers, and it?s all about the truck being a tool and they want it to be more productive and more efficient,? says Doug Scott, Ford?s truck marketing manager. ?So we have to keep moving the needle if we want to be king of hill. We?re always looking at all the ways of doing that going forward and we have a great strategy.?

Although aluminum is typically thought of as a more delicate metal than steel, Alcoa spokesman Kevin Lowery notes that the military uses aluminum for a number of its vehicles. Lowery is also quick to point out that aluminum can save costs in other areas of vehicle components.

?When vehicles weigh less you may need a smaller engine, or the brakes you need are going to be different, and that goes throughout the entire vehicle,? he said.

Other truck manufacturers will likely follow in Ford?s footsteps as aluminum use within the auto industry is expected to double by 2025.

Small Start to Local Church is Now a Big Impact on Community

(Springfield, MO) -- There are churches all across the city of Springfield, spread in all directions.

But one church is using a central location to make an impact in the community.

It began with just four guys, four friends in a small basement of the old Skinny Improv Theatre.

They were young and appealead to the younger generation.

But now after five years, their message speaks to all ages.

The name of the church is Emmaus, named after a story in the Bible.

And after outgrowing that old theatre basement, they are now located just above the Gilloiz Theatre.

Emmaus is lead by four guys with the oldest one being just 35 years old.

They all go by the title of pastor because there is no heiarchy of rank.

One of the pastors is Kent Shelton and he said that it is a simple system between the friends.

They're just four regular guys who started a church.

"We've had to learn a lot along the way. We didn't even really have a gamplan in place at the beginning. but we knew what we wanted to be and didn't want to be and through it all we have slowly fine tuned and kinda involved into what we are now, " said Kent Shelton, Emmaus Pastor.

Again, Emmaus is located just above the Gilloiz Theatre, with a service time of 10:30 a.m. every Sunday.

And also they have what they call "house churches" that meet at several different locations Sunday through Thursday.

Palestinians don't expect much in Israel talks

? The Palestinians are downplaying expectations ahead of their first meeting with Israelis in more than a year.

The chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, and Israeli envoy Yitzhak Molcho are set to meet in Jordan on Tuesday in a bid to get peace talks restarted. Negotiations have been stalled since September 2010.

Erekat told reporters in the West Bank on Monday that he doesn't expect any breakthroughs unless Israel agrees to halt settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. He also says Israel must accept its 1967 lines as the basis for a future border.

Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel rejects the Palestinian demands and says peace talks should resume without preconditions.
