Report: US Kate Bush fan deported over proposal (AP)

LONDON ? British police say a man was arrested close to the home of singer Kate Bush, amid media reports a fan broke into her home in England and attempted to propose marriage.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed Saturday that a 32-year-old man was detained on Dec. 26 and later deported, following a report of damaged property at Bush's home in Devon, southwestern England.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported that the man was Frank Tufaro, from New York, who had flown to Britain with a $4,500 Tiffany engagement ring.

It quoted him as saying he was inside Bush's house "for about eight minutes before I realized I had to leave."

The newspaper said the singer was not at home at the time of the incident.

Police said the detained man was deported by the U.K. Border Agency.

Familial factors don't affect disability risk, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 2012) ? Factors other than genetics and childhood environment affect the risk of going on medical leave or disability pension, reports a study in the January Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

Led by ?sa Samuelsson, MSc, of Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, the researchers used a database including nearly 53,000 Swedish twins born between 1952 and 1958. Twin studies provide uniquely valuable information on the familial factors -- genetics and early life experiences -- affecting health and illness.

At follow-up from 1992 to 2007, the average percentage of participants on disability pension was 10.7 percent per year. Not surprisingly, the strongest risk factor for disability was age: risk was nine times higher for older versus younger workers. Disability pension rates were about five times higher for less-educated workers and two times higher for those who were unmarried.

Marital status was a stronger risk factor in men than women. Risk was also somewhat higher for people living in rural or semi-rural areas.

All of these factors remained significant after adjusting for familial factors. This indicates that disability risk is related to "factors not shared by family members, such as experience or choices in adulthood," the researchers write.

Recent decades have seen rising rates of sick leave and disability pensions in developed countries. Although some studies have looked at risk factors for disability pensions, the role of familial factors remains unclear. Studies of twins -- who share both genetic and (usually) early environmental factors -- provide a unique opportunity to tease out the factors contributing to risk.

The new study suggests that genetic and other familial factors play little if any role in long-term disability risk, Samuelsson and colleagues conclude. Rather, they believe the risk factors identified represent factors in later life that aren't necessarily shared by family members.

Same Sex Romance Comes to a Galaxy Far, Far Away (Newsarama.com)

Same-sex relationships are coming to the "Star Wars" universe, courtesy of video game developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts' new massively multiplayer online role- playing game (or "MMORPGs" or "MMOs" for short), "Star Wars: The Old Republic," and the decision is getting people talking.

MMOs are games that create immersive virtual environments in which millions of players can interact with computer-generated characters as well as characters created by fellow gamers. While this is BioWare's first MMO, the developer is known among fans for the emphasis they place on romantic relationships between characters in their single-player role-playing games. In the past, BioWare games have featured same-sex relationships between men and women, and in the case of the immensely popular sci-fi game "Mass Effect," relationships between men and women with an asexual alien.

BioWare originally announced that players and their companions in "Star Wars: The Old Republic" would only be able to experience mixed-gender romantic relationships. After many inquiries from fans asking the developer to explain the decision, earlier this week a new forum post by Stephen Reid, the senior online community manager for the game, showed up on the company's official website announcing that those fans had been heard and same-sex romance will be added to the game.

BioWare's statement explained that while the game will still launch with only male/female relationships, they will be adding same gender romance options in future updates.

"Due to the design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same gender romances with companion characters in 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' will be a post-launch feature. Because 'The Old Republic' is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options."

"Companion characters" are computer-controlled characters that follow player-created characters around the virtual world, aiding them as gamers maneuver through the story.

The response to BioWare's announcement has been massive. There are 326 pages of comments as of Friday afternoon on the official "Star Wars: The Old Republic" forum alone. They range from "thank you for listening to our requests" to "how dare you expose my children to this."

The game has no firm release date, only a release window of "holiday 2011." It has also already received an ESRB rating of "T for Teen," meaning the game is recommended for players 13 and older. Neither facts have stopped detractors from crying foul, such as John Nolte on the blog "Big Hollywood," who starts his post on the subject with "Say goodbye to your child's innocence," and ends with the inaccurate proclamation, "Announcing the gay relationships AFTER the game has been sold is pure bait and switch."

The game already has reportedly broken preorder records for publisher Electronic Arts.

Turkey's custody laws draw flak after general held (Reuters)

ISTANBUL (Reuters) ? A day after the jailing of Turkey's former military chief, pending possible trial on accusations he tried to overthrow the government, newspaper columnists criticized the authorities for failing to reform sweeping pre-trial custody laws.

An Istanbul court sent shockwaves through Turkey by sending General Ilker Basbug to Silivri prison, west of Istanbul, on Friday. The prosecution has yet to lay formal charges against the man who was chief of staff from 2008 to 2010.

While pro-government newspapers hailed the decision as a triumph for democracy, demonstrating no one was above the law, other commentators said his imprisonment highlighted a need for legal reform to rein in powers to arrest and detain.

Mustafa Aykol, a writer often cited as sympathetic to the ruling AK Party, said the penal code referring to "helping a terrorist organization" risked being used to criminalize an ideology.

"Turkey's arresting machine, as it has always done, can easily put suspects in prison for years, for accusations that sometimes look very overblown," he wrote in the Hurriyet Daily News in a commentary headlined "Turkey's arresting machine gone mad."

Basbug is accused of involvement in the spread of negative propaganda on websites against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government, which swept to power in 2002 and won a third term last June with 50 percent of the vote.

Tensions between the staunchly secularist military and the Islamist-rooted AK Party are long-held, though the party shuns the Islamist label and calls itself socially conservative.

Some 58 serving and 81 retired generals and admirals are in custody, suspected of involvement in plots against Erdogan's government.

Basbug is also accused of having ties with an ultra-nationalist network dubbed "Ergenekon," that police said they discovered in 2007.

Mehmet Ali Birand, one of Turkey's leading columnists, said the case against Basbug was implausible and his jailing provided further evidence of an unjust system.

"We shall never break this vicious cycle unless the disgraceful practice of arresting, pending trial, comes to an end, he wrote in Hurriyet.

"The parties responsible for this freak show are none other than political authorities who just don't want to fix the situation."

GOVERNMENT LOOKING AT LAWS

Some critics say the government has used the probe to silence opposition and cow the military.

The government denies any such a motive but Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said Friday that the government had taken note of the criticism.

Hundreds of people, including retired and serving military officers, journalists, academics and lawyers, have been detained since 2007 under the widening Ergenekon investigation. Many have yet to face trial.

Atalay said new regulations governing custody orders and arrests may be introduced along with measures to speed up the judicial process.

Basbug's lawyer is expected to appeal in the coming days against the court's order that the general be remanded in custody while the prosecution builds its case.

Some observers point out that Basbug is hardly a flight risk given he is well known, nor could he interfere with the investigation - one reason for remanding suspects in custody - as the probe goes back to 2008.

In the past the military, which overthrew four governments between 1960 and 1997, could count on support from senior judges until Erdogan introduced reforms in 2010 that changed the way judges were selected.

Ahmet Altan, the editor of Taraf, regarded as an anti-military newspaper that has broken many of the Ergenekon stories, suspected the ruling party had its own motives in being reluctant to reform legal processes.

"The AK Party has the opportunity and power to change this country, to set up a new system, and the reason why it's not doing so is because it enjoys the amazing power offered by the darkness."

How would you change the HTC Titan?

We fell in love with the 4.7-inch HTC Titan's brilliant build quality, battery life and camera -- less so for the bad pixel density, Mango's flakiness and only having 12GB free memory once the OS had made its land grab. But if you found yourself back in 2010 when HTC was hashing out the schematics for this giant of a smartphone, what would you have demanded it do differently? (We'll cover the Sensation XL in a couple of weeks for those of you who grabbed the Android version of this device.) There's a river of comments below, come on in, the water's fine!

Penn State Ready To Name New Football Coach, ESPN Says

Penn State University has chosen New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien to be its next head football coach and the man who will try to rebuild a program that was rocked last fall by a scandal that cost legendary coach Joe Paterno the job, ESPN reports. The sports network says an announcement is expected to be made Saturday.

The Associated Press says:

"Penn State coaches contacted by The Associated Press said they had not received any word late Thursday night about O'Brien or anything else related to the two-month long search to replace Hall of Famer Joe Paterno. The Nittany Lions' leader for 46 seasons was fired Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

"O'Brien has no apparent ties to Penn State."

Harrisburg's Patriot-News reports that:

"Penn State players and former players reacted Thursday night to the report of O'Brien joining the PSU program on Twitter.

" 'Well, alright then,' tweeted former PSU quarterback Daryll Clark. 'If this is true, then welcome, Bill O'Brien. Let's get to work.'

" 'Welcome Coach O'Brien!' tweeted PSU tailback Silas Redd.

" 'As long as he brings the same type of offense ... welcome, Bill,' joked PSU tight end Garry Gilliam, a Milton Hershey graduate, on Twitter."

Officially, Penn State spokesmen are telling news outlets that they have no comment.

Sandusksy, a former Penn State assistant football coach, faces 50 charges related to alleged sexual abuse of 10 young boys over the course of more than a decade. Some of the incidents allegedly happened on campus. He says he's innocent. Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier lost their jobs because a grand jury reported there was evidence that they had been told about Sandusky's alleged crimes but did not alert police.

Singapore Air, Qantas say cracks found in Airbus A380 (Reuters)

SINGAPORE/SYDNEY (Reuters) ? Singapore Airlines (SIA) (SIAL.SI) and Qantas Airways (QAN.AX) said on Friday they discovered cracks on the wing ribs of their Airbus A380s, but said the cracks pose no threat to safety and repairs have been carried out.

The remarks came after Airbus (EAD.PA) said on Thursday that engineers discovered minor cracks in the wings of a "limited number" of A380s, but said the cracks were not affecting the safety of the aircraft.

"Cracks were found on a small number of wing rib feet on an Airbus A380 during inspections in the second half of last year. These pose no safety issue and repairs were carried out on the aircraft," SIA's spokesman Nicholas Ionides said in an email to Reuters.

"Repairs were subsequently carried out on a second aircraft. We have kept the relevant regulatory authorities fully informed and will be carrying out inspections and any necessary repairs on other A380s as they go in for routine checks," he added.

Qantas (QAN.AX) separately said that "minuscule cracking" was found in the wing ribs of the Qantas A380 being repaired in Singapore after one of its Rolls-Royce (RR.L) Trent 900 engines suffered a mid-air blowout in 2010.

"Investigations have found that the cracking is unrelated to the engine failure incident experienced by this aircraft in November 2010 and is not unique to Qantas. It has now been repaired," the carrier said in a statement.

"No immediate action is required by A380 operators because the cracking presents no risk whatsoever to flight safety," Qantas said.

Airbus said it has traced the origin of the problem and developed an inspection and repair procedure that will be done during routine, scheduled four-year maintenance checks.

SIA, the world's second-biggest carrier by market value and the first operator of such aircraft, operates 14 A380s and has five on order, while Qantas has taken delivery of 10 of its 20 A380 aircraft on order, according to the airline's website.

Both Singapore Airlines and Qantas are using Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines on their A380 fleets.

Linux kernel hits version 3.2, plenty of power-saving features in tow

Linux 3.2It's a little later than originally anticipated, but Linux kernel 3.2 is finally here. As per usual, it packs a number of improvements -- most them under the hood. Perhaps most exciting are some power-saving features related to graphics drivers, which should help get those battery life issues under control in Ubuntu 12.04. Other improvements include better (and hopefully more stable) WiFi drivers and faster read access to EXT4 formatted file systems. The list of changes is pretty epic to say the least. You can find plenty more detail at the source as well as a link to download the kernel for yourself, though, we highly recommend you wait until it comes to your distro of choice on its own.

Celebrating Elvis: King's legacy lives on

Elvis Presley Museum D?sseldorf

Elvis is shown in front of the castle gate in Bad Nauheim, Germany, in June 1959. He was stationed at Friedberg, Germany, while serving in the U.S. Army but maintained an off-base residence in Bad Nauheim.

By Tanya Mohn, msnbc.com contributor

For Elvis Presley fans, 2012 promises to be a good year. There are exhibits, tours, special events, concerts, promotions and celebratory cruises in the works to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the King?s death, who would have celebrated his birthday on?Jan. 8.

And a new museum housing a large private collection of memorabilia opened to the public last month in D?sseldorf, Germany. The Elvis Presley Museum D?sseldorf is possibly one of the largest such collections outside of the United States, according to the museum.

?People love it. They all go out with a big smile on their faces,? said Andy Schroeer, one of three collectors who founded the museum, which has already welcomed visitors from Europe and the United States.

Slideshow: The life of Elvis Presley

The approximately 1,500 items that form the permanent collection reflect Presley?s professional and personal life, and include writings, letters, photographs, records, jewelry, furniture, clothing and documents, like the performing artist?s first order for a single and his transfer papers from Sun Records to RCA Victor in 1955 for a fee of $40,000, ?an astonishing amount at the time and a move that contributed to his becoming a superstar,? the museum said in a statement.

A number of items never before been shown in public will be on display for the first time, Schroeer said, like the signed shirt that Elvis donated in 1959 to the German magazine BRAVO for a contest.

The winner kept the shirt unopened in the original package for more than 30 years. "He was no Elvis fan and was kind of disappointed when he learned that he had won the Presley Sports shirt," Schroeer said.

By 1958, Elvis had a promising musical and acting career but joined the Army?after receiving his draft notice and served active duty in Germany until 1960. The museum owns many items from that period.

The exhibits are intended ?to show the more private side of Presley?s life,? Schroeer said. ?There are really no big stories.? For example, the records Presley had shipped from the U.S. to Germany reveal his personal taste in music at the time, which was a mix of gospel and other spiritual music, as well as rock 'n' roll. ?Elvis was very much into the Jordanaires. He loved those guys to death.? Also included are personal notes Presley made in ?The Prophet,? by Khalil Gibran, his mother?s journal entries and the personal appointment book he kept in 1959 in Bad Nauheim, Germany.

J. Keilwerth / Elvis Presley Museum D?sseldorf

At left, Elvis' black Isana Guitar with case and amplifier. At right, the bicycle he received at the age of 13.

Displayed items do not have explanatory text next to them, as visitors come from so many different countries that text would need to be in many languages, which would take away from the experience, Schroeer said. Rather, visitors are given a listing of items with text in their own language.

The idea for the museum came about 10 years ago.?Schroeer and?the other two collectors, Oskar Hentschel and Michael Knorr, who have been friends since meeting at a local Elvis Presley fan club in the mid-1980s, wanted a home for their collections and the ability to share them with a larger audience. But each started his collection independently.

Schroeer began collecting in 1975 at age 10 when he received ?Elvis Forever,? a double LP for Christmas. ?Elvis could drive fast cars ... he was like a personal hero. You wanted to own something he held in his own hands,? recalled Schroeer, who wrote ?Private Presley: The Missing Years ? Elvis in Germany,? with his fellow collectors.

About 600 items will be exhibited at a time, but the collection will rotate regularly. Beginning Jan.?8, which would have been the King's 77th birthday, the museum will feature live music and new items, including a gold record on loan for?four months that was engraved with Presley?s name misspelled?? Presly instead of Presley ? which was kept by the engraver after the mistake was discovered,?Schroeer said. Photographs of the new and original gold records will also be on view.

It?s all for a simple goal, Schroeer said. ?To keep the memory of Elvis Presley alive. That?s what people appreciate.?

Scott Williams, vice president of marketing and media for Elvis Presley Enterprises, said the opening of a new museum featuring Presley memorabilia was not unusual. ?There is not a country where there isn?t some Elvis activity going on. There are fan clubs all over the world; that?s one of the ways fans celebrate their love for Elvis.?

Williams said much of the reason is due to the performer?s broad appeal. ?He was a one-of-a-kind entertainer,? whose personal story of working his way up from poverty, as well as his musical range, provide ?something to relate to, no matter what your tastes are.?

?Every year is a big year for Elvis,? Williams said, ?but for whatever reason, the 5th year benchmarks have become historically larger.? Graceland in Memphis is planning a year-long series of activities to honor the 35th anniversary of the late singer?s death, which will kick off with an annual birthday celebration Jan. 5-8, followed by a cruise from Jacksonville, Fla., to Nassau, Bahamas, on Jan. 12-16. ?It?s an entire ship of Elvis fans,? said Williams. ?It?s nothing but Elvis.?

There will also be new exhibits, touring tribute concerts and ?the largest exhibit outside Memphis of Elvis artifacts? will take place in
Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2012 featuring hundreds of items on loan from Graceland, including the performer?s gold phone and red MG, Williams said.
