Study: Less religious states give less to charity

BOSTON (AP) ? States with the least religious residents are also the stingiest about giving money to charity, a new study on the generosity of Americans suggests.

The study, released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, found that residents in states where religious participation is higher than the rest of the nation, particularly in the South, gave the greatest percentage of their discretionary income to charity.

The Northeast, with lower religious participation, was the least generous to charities, with the six New England states filling the last six slots among the 50 states. Churches are among the organizations counted as charities by the study, and some states in the Northeast rank in the top 10 when religious giving is not counted.

The most generous state was Utah, where residents gave 10.6 percent of their discretionary income to charity. Next were Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. The least generous was New Hampshire, at 2.5 percent, followed by Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

In Boston, semi-retired carpenter Stephen Cremins said the traditional New England ideal of self-sufficiency might explain the lower giving, particularly during tight times when people have less to spare.

"Charity begins at home. I'm a big believer of that, you know, you have to take care of yourself before you can help others," Cremins said.

The study found that in the Northeast region, including New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, people gave 4.1 percent of their discretionary income to charity. The percentage was 5.2 percent in the Southern states, a region from Texas east to Delaware and Florida, and including most of the so-called Bible Belt.

The Bible mandates a 10 percent annual donation, or tithe, to the church, and the donation is commonly preached as a way to thank God, care for others and show faith in God's provision. But it has a greater emphasis in some faiths.

In Mormon teachings, for instance, Latter Day Saints are required to pay a 10 percent tithe to remain church members in good standing, which helps explain the high giving rate in heavily-Mormon Utah.

"Any LDS member who is faithful does that," said Valerie Mason, 70, of Mesa, Ariz., during an interview in Salt Lake City. "Some struggle with it. Some leave the church because of it. But we believe in the blessing. ... Tithing does bring the blessing of God's promise."

When only secular gifts are counted, New York climbs from No. 18 to No. 2 in giving, and Pennsylvania rises from No. 40 to No. 4.

The study was based on Internal Revenue Service records of people who itemized deductions in 2008, the most recent year statistics were available. The data allowed researchers to detail charitable giving down to the ZIP code.

To ensure that states with differing costs of living were judged by the same standard, researchers calculated each state's median discretionary income ? the money remaining per household after variable but essential costs such as housing, child care and food are paid for. They then looked at the percentage of discretionary income that the typical household in each state gave to charity.

Alan Wolfe, a political science professor at Boston College, said it's wrong to link a state's religious makeup with its generosity.

People in less religious states are giving in a different way by being more willing to pay higher taxes so the government can equitably distribute superior benefits, Wolfe said. And the distribution is based purely on need, rather than religious affiliation or other variables, said Wolfe, also head of the college's Boisi Center for Religion and Public Life.

Wolfe said people in less religious states "view the tax money they're paying not as something that's forced upon them, but as a recognition that they belong with everyone else, that they're citizens in the common good. ... I think people here believe that when they pay their taxes, they're being altruistic."

Tax and entitlement payments were among the variable living expenses researchers subtracted to arrive at their figures for each state's discretionary income, said Peter Panepento, the Chronicle's assistant managing editor.

"That said, the numbers can't account for psychology and it's very possible that people who live in high-tax areas might feel as though they are already giving a lot of money to help the greater good through their taxes," Panepento said in an email.

The study also found that patterns of charitable giving are colored in political reds and blues.

Of the 10 least generous states, nine voted for Democrat Barack Obama for president in the last election. By contrast, of the 10 most generous states, eight voted for Republican John McCain.

But Panepento said that political breakdown likely speaks to a state's religious makeup, not its prevailing political views. He noted the lowest-ranked Democrat states were also among the least religious, while the top-ranked Republican states were among the more religious.

"I don't know if I could go out and say it's a complete Republican-Democrat difference as much as it is different religious attitudes and culture in these states," he said.

Among other notable findings of the study:

? People who earn $200,000 per year give a greater percentage to charity when they live in ZIP codes with fewer people who are as wealthy as they are.

? People who earn between $50,000 and $75,000 annually give a higher percentage of their discretionary income to charity (7.6 percent) than those who make $100,000 or more (4.2 percent).

Health Reviews Online: Signs You Need a Hearing Test Soon

A hearing test is an opportunity to learn if you have a problem or, if you know that you do, this can help you to learn if you need to do something about the condition. The best place to get this type of help is through a specialist. Many doctor's offices do offer basic screenings but the information from a specialist will be more thorough and provide a better possible outcome for you. In some cases, you may learn that there is no real loss and that you do not need to do anything more. However, when there is a problem, getting help can help improve your quality of life.

When Do You Need It?

Some situations occur in which a hearing test is very important to seek for immediate help. In fact, if you are struggling with any type of loss, it is best to get help as soon as possible. Though this type of treatment cannot stop or cure the condition, it can improve your quality of life to a significant level. In some situations, it can provide you with a better ability to do the things you like to do and want to do.

Do you suffer from the following symptoms? If so, then you may want to consider getting a hearing test sooner rather than later to find out how bad the problem is and what steps you need to take to improve it.

? Do you find that it is easier to understand what people are saying if they look at you and you can see their mouth?

? Do you dread having phone conversations because it always sounds like the other person is whispering or unable to speak clearly?

? Do you struggle to hear some types of sounds, such as low voices or very high sounds?

? Do you struggle to talk in-group conversations when the other person is a few feet or more away from you?

? Has your doctor taken the time to tell you that there is a problem with your ability to hear? You may have failed a screening in the doctor's office, for example.

If you are facing any limitations or you seem to have to ask people to repeat themselves more often, then it may be a good idea for you to have a hearing test. By doing this, you will have the ability to learn if there is a problem. If there is, the same appointment can provide you with a solution to your loss. In some cases, this may mean using a device that makes sounds easier for you to hear. Do not wait any longer to know what is happening.

Huma Abedin Praised By President Obama As 'American Patriot' At Ramadan Dinner

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama celebrated religious diversity at his fourth annual Ramadan Iftar dinner on Friday evening, mourning the victims of the recent Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin and fully backing State Department official Huma Abedin, who has had her allegiances called into question by conservative lawmakers.

"Of all the freedoms we cherish as Americans, of all the rights that we hold sacred, foremost among them is freedom of religion, the right to worship as we choose," Obama said at the dinner, held in the East Room of the White House. "It?s enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution -- the law of the land, always and forever. It beats in our heart -- in the soul of the people who know that our liberty and our equality is endowed by our creator."

Obama highlighted several Muslim American women who, he said, enrich America. One women he highlighted was Abedin, one of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's top aides.

"The American people owe her a debt of gratitude -- because Huma is an American patriot, and an example of what we need in this country -- more public servants with her sense of decency, her grace and her generosity of spirit," Obama said. "So, on behalf of all Americans, we thank you so much."

The president's recognition of Abedin comes as she faces accusations that she is helping the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrate the U.S. government. Five conservative lawmakers, led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), recently wrote to federal agencies asking for an investigation.

The accusations stem from a report by the Center for Security Policy. The organization is run by Frank Gaffney, who has been crusading against the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia law for years.

The Muslim Brotherhood claims have been widely dismissed, by figures who include Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and House Intelligence Committee Chair Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), as well as groups like the Anti-Defamation League and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Obama also paid tribute to the six victims of the Sikh temple shooting in Oak Creek, Wis. last week. They were murdered by a gunman who had white supremacist sympathies.

"We?ve seen instances of mosques and synagogues, churches and temples being targeted," Obama said. "Tonight, our prayers, in particular, are with our friends and fellow Americans in the Sikh community. We mourn those who were senselessly murdered and injured in their place of worship. And while we may never fully understand what motivates such hatred, such violence, the perpetrators of such despicable acts must know that your twisted thinking is no match for the compassion and the goodness and the strength of our united American family."

Obama continued, "So tonight, we declare with one voice that such violence has no place in the United States of America. The attack on Americans of any faith is an attack on the freedom of all Americans. No American should ever have to fear for their safety in their place of worship. And every American has the right to practice their faith both openly and freely, and as they choose."

The Best Glycolic Acid Products On The Market ? Beauty, Health and ...

Anti-aging is a huge business and if you are into taking care of your skin then Glycolic acid which is a form or alpha hydroxy acids (aha) are a common factor in the struggle for the fountain of youth. It helps peel away dead skin cells and gives your skin a smooth, softer feel and more radiant appearance. It also helps fade skin hyperpigmentation (melasma, age spots) and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles.

This acid is often found abundantly in skin care products and name brand cleansers/moisturizers. There are many brands out there that have glycolic acid products worthy of mentioning.

How Glycolic Acid Works

Dead kin cells comprise the top layer of skin called the epidermis and are bound together by a stick substance kind of like glue. An exfoliant?s job is to remove the ?dead? layer of skin cells to reveal the healthier skin cells below. Glycolic acid is different in that instead of abrading skin cells like normal scrubs do, it actually works by dissolving the glue-like bond that holds the cells together thus eliminating the ?dead cells? altogether.

Glycolic Acid Peels

Facial peels often contain a concentration of around 70% and are often performed in a clinical or aesthetic setting by a dermatologist or aesthetician. According to John?s Hopkins Medical Center the procedure is a 3 part process.

  • The Glycolic peel is applied and left on for 2 minutes then neutralized
  • It is a mild peel that has a very short recovery time
  • Normal activity can be resumed almost immediately

Jan Marini

Jan Marini is one of the leading skin care specialists in the world and her products are not only great quality, they are very effective. According to many authorities on the subject Jan Marini Age Intervention Regeneration Clay Masque is absorbs oil excess and also cleans with glycolic acid reducing breakouts. It is also equipped with antioxidants to nourish the skin and keep it hydrated thus reducing free radical damage.

Dr Jeffrey Dover

Dr Jeffrey Dover Glycolic Cream Cleanser was rated by Real Beauty Magazine as the best exfoliating cleanser on the market according to Livestrong.com. A more radiant looking skin is the result of using this product as well as moisturizing the skin with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid tackles the drying out issue often associated with glycolic acid.

DDF

Doctor?s Dermatologic Formula?s glycolic lotion a 10 percent acid concentration making it a superior and effective exfoliant. It also contains free radical fighting antioxidants and silicone to help moisturize and even skin tone.

Warnings

As with any product there are FDA warnings.

  • According to the FDA glycolic acid use can increase skin sensitivity to the sun. To prevent this high quality SPF sunscreen should be applied at all times or protective clothing should be worn for at least a week after the peel.
  • There also could be some mild side effects such as skin irritation, temporary redness and some peeling.
  • If symptoms become severe stop using the product and go see your dermatologist if needed.

US applications for unemployment aid fall by 6,000

(AP) ? The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 361,000, a level consistent with modest gains in hiring.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the less volatile four-week average rose by 2,250 to 368,250 in the week that ended Aug. 4.

Weekly applications bounced around in July, skewed by the difficulty of accounting for temporary summertime layoffs in the auto industry. The seasonal distortions had faded by last week.

Applications measure the pace of layoffs. When they consistently fall below 375,000, it typically suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said fewer unemployment applications suggest that job market is fairly stable.

"The pick-up in jobs growth in July may therefore be sustained in August," Dales said.

The economy added 163,000 jobs in July, the biggest increase since February. From April through June, employers had created a lackluster 73,000 jobs a month, not enough to keep up with a rising population.

"The improvement in jobless claims has been a most welcome development," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG. But he noted that unemployment claims were still high considering the recession ended more than three years ago. Claims averaged 328,000 in November 2004, three years after the 2001 recession: "So clearly more work needs to be done," he says.

The total number of people receiving some kind of benefits also fell. Nearly 5.8 million received aid in the week that ended July 21, the most recent data available. That's 200,000 less than a week earlier.

Despite the improvement in hiring in July, the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.

Most economists say growth must be stronger to generate enough jobs to lower unemployment. The economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, down from 2 percent in the first quarter and 4.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.

In a hopeful sign, U.S. employers posted the most job openings in four years in June. The Labor Department said this week that job openings rose to a seasonally adjusted 3.8 million in June from 3.7 million in May. That's the most since July 2008. Layoffs fell. A rise in openings could signal better hiring in the coming months. It typically takes one to three months to fill a job.

Even with the increase, hiring is competitive. There were 12.7 million unemployed people in June, or an average of 3.4 unemployed people for each job.

U.S. companies got a bit more out of their workers in the spring. Their productivity grew at a slim 1.6 percent annualized rate in the April-June quarter, signaling that employers may have to hire more if orders pick up.

Skype bug forwards conversation snippets to random people

3 hrs.

Skype has confirmed that?? under "rare circumstances" ??parts of instant message conversations made over the chat service may be forwarded to an unintended recipient.?

How devastating is this issue??

A Skype spokesperson didn't elaborate beyond a pre-written statement, but based on user comments in the official Skype support forums, we can piece together what happens if you're one of the unlucky few affected by this bug.

Let's say that User A and User B are exchanging instant messages over Skype today. Tomorrow, User A might log on and find a message from User C?? one of his or her contacts???asking about something that was said in that conversation. The message User C received, without any action by User A or User B,?would've been a line or two from the conversation the two had.

Scary, no? Just think back to the last few instant message conversations you've had and imagine what would happen if some?random lines from it were sent to a random person on your or your conversation partner's contact lists. (Now that I think about my own conversations, I suddenly want to upgrade that "scary" to a "terrifying.")

The Skype spokesperson I spoke to explained that the company is aware of the issue and will be rolling out a fix for it "in the next few days." Users will be notified that they should download an updated version of Skype once that is available.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Google CEO Page 'Recovering,' Back in the Office

Google CEO Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page was back at the office last week after a mystery ailment causing the loss of his speaking voice forced him to miss last month's Google I/O developer conference, according to the company's chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt updated reporters with the news about Page's condition at a fireside chat with media in Sun Valley, Idaho last Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It's not clear if Page has completely regained his voice, but Schmidt said, ""Larry is doing much better ... he seems fine," according to the Journal. The specific nature of Page's ailment has not been revealed.

Schmidt told shareholders in June that Page would be missing upcoming Google events, including Google I/O and the company's upcoming second-quarter earnings call on July 19. Schmidt didn't say if Page's plans regarding next Thursday's conference call with investors and analysts had changed given his apparent return to health.

Page continued to run Google the past few weeks despite his illness, Schmidt said. The 39-year-old CEO has been communicated via email and other forms of written messaging during his recovery.

Meanwhile, at the same fireside chat in Sun Valley, Schmidt talked up Google's self-driving car initiative, opining that "self-driving cars should become the predominant mode of transportation in our lifetime," according to Tech Crunch.
