Manning-Brady the greatest ? and it doesn't matter

QB rivalry is the greatest in NFL history but has little to do with the outcome

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady meet after the Patriots' 31-21 win in?Foxboro, Mass.

By Scott Kacsmar

updated 4:17 p.m. ET Oct. 8, 2012

It was Chapter 13 of "The War of 1812" ? better known as Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady ? and the 31-21 result went like most of the first dozen games: The New England Patriots proved they are a better-coached, more complete team.

While it will go down as the greatest quarterback rivalry in NFL history, the truth is the performances of these quarterbacks have had little impact on New England?s 9-4 record in the rivalry since 2001.

Sunday?s game was another great example, and it may have shown the Denver Broncos are simply not yet on the same tier as the Patriots in the AFC. Their quarterback was fit for battle, but this team ? obliterated 86-33 by the Patriots in two games last year ? is still very much a work in progress.

Perhaps already being passed over in the conference they have dominated for a decade by teams like Houston and Baltimore, the Patriots and Broncos still expect to be major players come playoff time. However, if recent performances are any indicator, then New England, as always, is definitely more prepared than Denver.

History of Manning vs. Brady: Don?t fall for the 'QB wins' narrative
It appears some people still think that just because a team wins a game, even regardless of performance, the winning quarterback is better than the loser.

This was alive and well on Sunday, when several reports gushed over the game from Brady (23 of 31 for 223 yards, TD, rushing TD), while ignoring the effort Manning gave his team to even be competitive, unlike they were in their 45-10 playoff defeat last season in Foxboro.

Manning, who finished 31 of 44 for 345 yards and three scores, gave the kind of big performance that has usually led to a win in his career. He is now 24-5 when throwing for more than 300 yards, three touchdowns and a passer rating of at least 100.0. According to ESPN, Manning had the league?s highest QBR (91.3) in a loss this season. Brady?s was 82.1.

Going up against Bill Belichick always makes for a challenging chess match. And Manning has gone into the match-up under four different head coaches ? Jim Mora, Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell, and now John Fox ? which has been part of the struggle.

New England would win this particular game, but look at the real reasons, which have little to do with the two headline-stealing quarterbacks themselves.

Ground domination
Like in many match-ups, New England dominated the trenches. Brady handed the ball off 50 times for 253 yards (5.06 YPC). That?s only the most rushing support Brady has ever had in 186 career starts. Compare it to 18 carries for 61 yards (3.39 YPC) for Manning?s Broncos.

In the 13 career meetings, Brady?s running game has produced 356 carries for 1,641 yards (4.61 YPC) compared with 329 carries for 1,290 yards (3.92 YPC) for Manning?s offenses.

The run-game domination was most evident in the third quarter. Denver had to punt after over-committing to the run, and the Patriots would soon face a 3rd-and-17 situation with a 17-7 lead. On what seemed to be a give-up play, Danny Woodhead ran right through the defense on his way to a 19-yard gain and a crucial first down. Four minutes later, the Patriots were in the end zone for a 24-7 lead.

How rare was that? Since 2000, the longest conversion on a third-down run was Donovan McNabb scrambling for 27 yards on a 3rd and 25 against none other than the Denver Broncos in 2009. At least that is not quite as bad as Leroy Hoard gaining 53 yards on a simple draw on 3rd and 37. Who was that against, again? Oh, that?s right. It was the Denver Broncos in 1999 .

Defense rests
Defense is always crucial when Manning and Brady meet. Brady had the better defense in 11 of the first 12 meetings, often significantly so. The average rankings in defensive points per drive for the Colts (21.8) and Patriots (6.3) in years they met could not be much different. The one time Manning clearly had the better defense, it was a 40-21 blowout by Indianapolis in New England back in 2005.

Coming into Week 5 the defenses had similar numbers in terms of points allowed, but the Patriots were much better at creating takeaways, which again proved deadly. The New England defense collected three fumbles, including a rare one from Manning after he was heavily pressured in the third quarter.

Denver bookended its performance with fumbles. First it was Demaryius Thomas ? somehow for the second straight game ? fumbling after a huge gain of 43 yards at the NE 10. The final straw came when Willis McGahee fumbled at the NE 11 with the Broncos trailing 31-21 with 3:42 left. Earlier in the quarter McGahee dropped a perfect pass from Manning on 4th and 1 with 10:50 left. No miracle comeback this time.

Not like we haven?t seen this before. In the 13 games, Manning?s offense has 33 turnovers (19 interceptions, 14 fumbles) compared with only 20 (12 interceptions, eight fumbles) for the Patriots. Five of the fumbles for Manning?s skill players were in the red zone, compared with two for Brady.

Better defenses get more takeaways, and that has often been the case for Patriots.

Sunday?s formula
Add things together and you get this devastating formula: Since 1970, teams that rush for at least 250 yards and get at least three takeaways are 188-5-1 (.972). That is what New England did Sunday, and that ultimately decided the game.

For as much attention as Manning and Brady get, the fact is their games have not once been a true shootout. They actually often follow a very similar pattern. Manning?s team makes a lot of mistakes, the Patriots take a lead of 17-24 points, and in the fourth quarter Manning tries to lead a furious rally. The New England offense then sputters badly, and it usually comes down to the final, frenetic drive.

We have seen Manning pull off the record-setting 18-point comeback win in the 2006 AFC Championship, and the 17-point comeback in the fourth quarter in the 2009 game known for the ?4th and 2? play, but usually the Patriots hold up in the end.

Even with a new team, the Broncos, the formula was in play. But McGahee?s fourth-quarter mistakes cost us a chance at another classic finish.

Hardly anyone even remembers the 2001 games ? when they were still in the AFC East together no less ? because of how ?new? the Patriots were to success, and how forgettable a season the Colts had with the league?s worst defense, which led to Jim Mora?s firing.

We have seen Manning lay an egg with four interceptions in the 2003 AFC Championship. Brady did the same in the 2006 meeting, which cost the Patriots home-field advantage over the Colts that year. We have seen a goal line stand (2003), a missed field goal at the end (2004), and countless red zone turnovers. Usually these are mistakes from Manning?s team.

On Sunday, we saw a lot of the same things. For the eighth time in 13 games, the Patriots led by at least 17 points. For the fifth time in those games, it was still close in the final minutes. Just not as close as usual.

For as much hype as the ?great quarterback duel? receives every year, the duel has been video game-like gang violence with a lot of friendly fire involved, and the difficulty settings are never equal for both players.

Going forward
There was skepticism over how well the offensive line would protect for the Patriots this season, but they look as dominant as ever in the ground game, which has balanced the offense and made them lethal as of late. It especially shows up in the no-huddle attack, and this is with second-year back Stevan Ridley and undrafted free agent rookie Brandon Bolden carrying the load.

The past two weeks have produced the two biggest rushing performances in any of Tom Brady?s 186 career starts. Against Buffalo it was 39 carries for 243 yards. The offense scored 52 points and had 33 first downs. Against Denver it had the 50 carries for 253 yards, a team-record 35 first downs, and 31 points.

New England?s had a lot of recent success against Buffalo ? which has an eyesore of a defense that let the 49ers become the first team in NFL history to gain over 300 yards in rushing and passing in a game ? and Denver, so it remains to be seen if this is sustainable. But right now the Patriots are running the ball better than at any point in the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady era. That?s a scary thought for defensive coordinators.

Defensively, they also are improved over last season. Though not an elite shut-down unit like they had in their championship seasons, the Patriots still come up with big takeaways, and they have nine in their last two games alone.

The Patriots have already moved past two of the biggest hurdles on their schedule (Baltimore and Denver) with a 1-1 record. The toughest remaining games are a pair of back-to-back games versus Houston and San Francisco, but that is not until December, and both are at home.

Typically the winner of the Manning vs. Brady showdown gets home-field advantage over the other in the AFC, and the two have started a combined seven Super Bowls. We will learn just how important this game actually was this time around.

For the Denver Broncos, it was another tough loss in which they fell behind by at least 20 points, made a fourth-quarter rally but came up short again. If most teams in the league had played their schedule ? losses to the undefeated Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans, a win over Pittsburgh ? then they would be 2-3 or worse by now as well, so that is a consolation prize.

But things have to get better for Denver earlier in games, and it must start now. Before their bye, they go to San Diego (3-2) for a huge AFC West game on Monday Night Football, and the Chargers have had Manning?s number in the past, often forcing him into a very one-dimensional attack.

This is Denver versus San Diego now, but the Broncos look very similar to the Colts of recent years, and that demands perfection from Manning. He has done it in spurts, but not for a full game versus the best teams, and he needs his teammates to step up to his level to get there. Right now there are too many mistakes from Denver?s offense and not enough impact plays on defense.

It looks like every time the Broncos lose this year, many are going to question Manning?s arm strength or how many deep balls he attempts. Just make sure you are not the same person praising a Tom Brady performance that ESPN says featured just a 1-of-5 effort on passes thrown more than 10 yards in the air, including some passes that were not even close, and not to mention several awkward ducking attempts in the pocket.

For some, winning has this magical power of making you overlook anything to try and better fit the narrative. "The War of 1812" deserves better than that.

Manning vs. Brady is the greatest quarterback rivalry in NFL history. But every chapter sure does split NFL fans, no matter whom they root for, into two distinct groups: those who care about the quarterback, and those who care about how the team did.

Global stocks, oil falter on weak outlook for global economy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks and oil prices fell on Monday after the World Bank cut its growth forecast for China, emphasizing concerns about the prospects for the global economy.

Jitters over the euro zone debt crisis knocked the euro down from two-week highs even as euro zone finance ministers meeting in Luxembourg gave a unified defense of Spain, saying the country does not need financial help.

The downward revision from the World Bank, which cut its growth expectations for the East Asia and Pacific region, added to the cautious tone in stocks heading into corporate earnings season, which starts in the United States on Tuesday.

Recent warnings from large multinationals such as FedEx Corp , Hewlett-Packard Co and Caterpillar Inc have already made investors wary.

"There is just a lot of uncertainty out there, so any little thing right now tends to be a bit of a drag. Some of it is China, some of it may be concerns about Europe again," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at OakBrook Investments LLC in Lisle, Illinois.

The World Bank said there was a risk the slowdown in China could worsen and last longer than many analysts have forecast. Still, the international lender expects China to have a soft landing as seen from the bank's revised 7.7 percent growth forecast for this year and 8.1 percent for next year.

The World Bank earlier this year had forecast 8.2 percent GDP growth for China in 2012 and 8.6 percent in 2013.

Wall Street was modestly lower in midday trading, while European shares ended down 1 percent. World shares as measured by the MSCI world equity index were down 0.7 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 30.03 points, or 0.22 percent, to 13,580.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 6.21 points, or 0.43 percent, at 1,454.72. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 24.37 points, or 0.78 percent, to 3,111.82.

The announcement from the World Bank deflated some of last week's positive sentiment in the markets spurred by an unexpected drop in the U.S. unemployment rate.

China's role as the last major growth engine in the world economy amplified the impact of the World Bank's forecasts in foreign exchange and commodity markets.

Fears slower economic growth would curb oil demand initially sent Brent crude lower, but tension in the Middle East helped the commodity pare losses. Brent was down 27 cents $111.75 a barrel, while U.S. crude dropped 40 cents to $89.48 a barrel.

EURO DRAG

Uncertainty over the next steps in solving the euro zone's debt crisis, coupled with the weak economic outlook weighed on the euro, which was 0.5 percent lower at $1.2970.

Euro zone finance ministers said Spain was taking steps to overhaul its economy and did not need a bailout, at least for now.

Arriving at a meeting in Luxembourg to discuss Greece and Spain and to inaugurate the euro zone's permanent bailout mechanism, the ESM, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Madrid had made clear it wanted no help.

"Perhaps those types of comments are not necessarily positive for the euro in the sense that markets are still looking for a Spanish request as the next big step forward for Europe," said Vassili Serebriakov, currency strategist at Wells Fargo in New York.

The euro had hit two-week highs on Friday. The dollar was up 0.3 percent against a basket of currencies .

In Europe, fresh data showed investor sentiment had improved for a second consecutive month in October thanks largely to the monetary easing by central banks and Germany's backing for a new permanent bailout fund for the European currency bloc.

German export data for August also surprised by jumping 2.4 percent month-on-month, far outperforming expectations for a drop of 0.5 percent in a Reuters poll of 17 economists.

Healthy Living Can Prevent Breast Cancer: Area Resources - Palos ...

You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers,?according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD.?

Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle?s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. ?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die from breast cancer.

Dr. Neuhouser?s research has found that for postmenopausal women in particular, being overweight or obese may increase the risk for breast cancer.

Dr. Neuhouser explains, ?After menopause, estrogens are synthesized by adipose tissue?the more adipose a woman has, the more estrogen she will make. Adipose cells also synthesize inflammatory factors, which have been linked to breast cancer.?

One of the most important things a woman at risk for breast cancer can do, says Dr. Neuhouser, is to ?maintain a healthy weight." ?

Given what the research indicates, Dr. Neuhouser says, ?One of the most important things is that if a woman is overweight or obese, she should be advised to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Daily physical activity and following healthy eating habits with plentiful fruits and vegetables and minimal empty calories and fried foods will help achieve these goals.?

Dr. Neuhouser says while it can be challenging to lose weight, ?Small changes can add up and make a big difference."

When it comes to getting active, Dr. Neuhouser says, "If someone is not used to physical activity, try a five to ten minute walk and gradually increase the time. Having physical activity partners or walking partners always helps. I know my soccer team will be waiting for me on the field, so even if I am tired or busy, I still show up."

As for food,?Dr. Neuhouser says, "Start with making one new food change each week. Instead of eating two cookies, eat just one.?

If you are concerned about your weight, Dr. Neuhouser suggests getting the support you need by asking your doctor for ? a referral to a reputable weight loss program.??For nutrition advice, Dr. Neuhouser recommends asking for a referral to a registered dietitian.

Plaudits vie with "pensioner" jibes as Russia's Putin turns 60

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Supporters planted Vladimir Putin's portrait on a mountain peak on Sunday as Russia marked his 60th birthday with adulation worthy of the Soviet era, but some mocking protesters portrayed him as a pensioner fit for retirement.

The ruling party's loyal Young Guard movement was to unfurl a banner on a bridge in southern Russia which they say symbolizes Putin's role in uniting the Asian and European parts of a giant country that stretches over nine time zones.

Its website published a video portraying Putin as the ultimate lady's man, waited on by a gaggle of adoring, long-legged women. Other events around the country played on the tough-guy image that has been core to Putin's political appeal.

Anti-Putin activists say the president won a third Kremlin term by rigging March presidential elections and ridiculed the birthday festivities as a personality cult.

They ditched plans for a major march through Moscow but were to stage a smaller scale "Let's send Grandpa into retirement" action near Red Square, protesters asked to bring gifts suitable for a pensioner such as reading glasses or a pipe.

The authorities appeared to be seeking to play down the event. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the president would spend the day relaxing with close family and no special celebrations were planned.

In the most ambitious tribute, a group of world-class mountaineers unfurled Putin's portrait at 4,150 meters (13,615 feet) atop one of the highest peaks in Russia's North Caucasus.

"We have stuck Putin's portrait on a rock wall we see as unbreakable and eternal as Putin," Kazbek Khamitsayev, who led the difficult climb up the icy peak, told Reuters.

"This is our present to Putin.... From the bottom of our hearts we celebrate him who has done so many courageous things for our country and is a strong guarantor of happiness and stability."

The Caucasus are particularly significant in recent Russian history as the relatively unknown Putin built his political career more than a decade ago by reimposing Moscow's rule in the region's secessionist Chechnya province.

"LADIES' MAN"

Even though Putin is at an age at which he can collect his pension, many of the tributes played to Putin's image as a sex symbol - one in five Russian women say they would be happy to marry him in a Levada Centre poll released on Friday.

The Young Guard video included young women in tight-fitting costumes anxiously checking their cell phones and staring longingly at portraits of Putin.

They re-enact the former KGB spy's macho stunts such as scuba diving, flying a fighter jet, playing hockey and galloping through a field. Each woman smiles as she receives a text message, promising "I'll be there soon." The clip ends with them cheering as a car presumably containing Putin pulls up.

In St. Petersburg, Putin's hometown, a VIP concert was planned while around 200 Kremlin supporters turned out for a "Pull-up for Putin" competition in Moscow. Other activists were to hold a poetry reading and take over a nightclub for a Putin-themed evening.

Anti-Putin activists marked the day in a rather different style, including a protest near Moscow's Red Square calling on Putin to retire. Organisers asked protesters to bring gifts suitable for a pensioner - from reading glasses to a pipe.

In a satire of the fawning celebrations organized by the pro-Kremlin camp, artists in Moscow staged an exhibit entitled "The President. The most kind-hearted soul", featuring a picture of Putin cuddling his Bulgarian sheepdog.

State television was to mark the event on Sunday night with documentaries on Putin's 12-years at the helm. He served as president from 2000-2008 and then four years as prime minister.

They were unlikely to be critical. One trailer aired on the Kremlin-friendly channel NTV showed Putin in tiny black swimming trunks answering questions after a lap in a pool.

Nevertheless, after 12 years as Russia's paramount leader, Putin's ratings are down from their peak during the oil-fuelled economic boom of his first presidency from 2000 until 2008.

In August the independent Levada polling group said 48 percent of Russians had a positive view of him compared to 60 percent in May when he began a new six-year term, though that is higher than that enjoyed by most Western politicians.

Five Reasons Your Real Estate Office Should Consider a Strategic ...

By Bob Brown

What do Bill Gates, Jack Welch and many other successful business people have in common? They understand the power of strategic alliances.

For realty firms and brokerages, strategic alliances with lenders can mean giving you more power ? power to win business in a competitive market. Here are five reasons your real estate office should consider?an alliance.

1. Convenient access to home financing creates a more positive homebuying experience. Satisfied customers recommend your brokerage and your agents to others, helping you to build an impressive book of business over the years. At the same time, today?s homebuyers consistently say they want access to information about home financing and that they want to understand the home loan process.

Social media has replaced one-to-one ?word of mouth? referrals with one-to-many ?word of click? recommendations. Now that clients have the ability to instantly ?like? or share other thoughts about a real estate agent and brokerage, creating a positive experience for your clients is more valuable than ever before.

A strategic alliance helps deliver a more positive homebuying experience. In an alliance, your clients will benefit from co-branded home financing information, access to a mortgage loan officer and expert guidance about the wide range of home loan options.

2. Prequalify buyers before they leave your office. How much can a potential homebuyer comfortably afford? This question is as important to agents as it is to the homebuyer.

With a strategic alliance, your agents can help clients find the answer to this question. Some alliances incorporate the ability for your clients to access technology tools and online resources from a laptop in your office. In addition, with certain alliances, you can be assured your clients have direct access to a mortgage loan officer ? on-site or over the phone.

In any case, an alliance can help you keep the client in your office. If you send potential clients away to get prequalified on their own, you risk losing them to another brokerage. Then someone else benefits from the effort and expense you incurred to attract clients to your office!

3. When rules and regulations change, your agents and clients will know. Both the mortgage and housing industries will continue to experience change over the next several years. Current and pending federal, state and local regulations will impact real estate and home financing. The housing agencies will continue to issue changes to underwriting guidelines.

With a strong strategic alliance partner, you and your agents have a valuable resource that can help you adapt to the dynamic environment. You?ll be updated on changes that impact your clients, so that their concerns can be addressed with a minimal effect on closing home sales.

4. Add revenue to your balance sheet. Certain types of alliances can deliver revenue in the form of flat monthly marketing fees, which pay for services performed or facilities provided.

One type, a space rental agreement, entitles the brokerage to a monthly market-value lease payment for space that a lender?s loan officer regularly occupies in the brokerage office. Another type is a marketing service agreement. With these agreements, the brokerage typically receives a marketing fee from the lender in exchange for certain marketing activities, such as displaying the lender?s signage and distributing co-branded flyers, brochures and other marketing materials to clients.

Fees from alliances must align with the value of the space rented or services provided so the compensation from alliances is typically not going to be large enough to cover big ticket expenses. However, the extra revenue that can be earned in an alliance can certainly go toward office amenities or day-to-day expenses (it is important to note that not all types of alliances include?fee arrangements).

5. Expand into additional markets with more confidence. The ideal strategic alliance partner offers a full array of loan products and dedicated mortgage loan experts to support your clients. These qualities can be quite powerful.

For example, if your firm specializes in the luxury home market, an alliance partner with expertise in jumbo financing can give you confidence to expand your geographic base. Or, perhaps you see the burgeoning market of Hispanic homebuyers as a smart way to grow your business. An alliance with a lender that has extensive multicultural experience and multilingual resources can give you the power to confidently pursue growth.

Most alliances can be customized so there is flexibility within your relationship. Alliance partners should not be locked in to activities that don?t make sense for them. In some cases a ?mix and match? approach to selecting marketing, co-branding and other features offered by a lender can enable you to enjoy an alliance relationship that satisfies your clients and meets the unique needs of your firm.

How Soon Will I See Health Benefits If I Quit Smoking? | Senior ...

Smoking does long term damage to your body. Some effects are reversible and some are not. The determining factor is how many cigarettes you smoked per day and how long you were a smoker. That being said though, that doesn?t mean you won?t see some immediate benefits if you kick the habit today.

smoker

Heart Rate and Blood Flow

In approximately 20 minutes after you crush out your final cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure will start dropping closer to normal levels. After about 12 hours, the level of carbon monoxide in your blood will drop to normal. After a few months, you should see a great improvement in your overall blood circulation.

Appearance

Even though health is the primary reason people quit smoking, there are some cosmetic benefits as well. First of all, your clothes will no longer smell like smoke after you wash them. You can whiten your teeth to remove the nicotine stains and they?ll stay white longer. If you have any yellow spots on your skin, they will start to heal and fade away.

Lungs

Impaired lungs do not heal quickly, but after three months or so you should start seeing improvements such as less gasping for air when you?re climbing steps or moving quickly. Within less than a year you?ll notice that you cough less and you breathe easier because your lungs are able to move mucus out faster. You will also notice a decrease in the number of times that you get sick because your lungs are healing and can fight off infections more effectively. In some cases, the lung damage caused by smoking can be completely reversed within 18 months after you quit.

Long Term Benefits

Everyone likes immediate gratification, but the further away you get from your quit date, the more your general health risks drop. After one year of not smoking, your risk for coronary heart disease drops by 50%. Five years down the road, your stroke and cancer risk levels drop as well. The most obvious risk, the chance of developing lung cancer, drops dramatically. Overall, your long-term health will improve significantly.

Other Benefits

Smoking dulls your senses, so you will notice that your taste buds will be sharper and food will taste better, which is one reason why many people put on some extra weight after they quit smoking. Your sense of smell will improve as well and you?ll notice that you are more sensitive to strong odors than you were before. For some people these two senses improve almost immediately, but for some people it takes longer.

Addictions are hard to face, but there are so many good reasons to quit smoking and no good reason to continue. Don?t just think about what happens the day after you quit, consider the long-term impact it will have on your life. After all, who doesn?t want to live a long, healthy and happy life?
