Small business workshop opens in Berbice

You are here: Home / News / Small business workshop opens in Berbice October 11, 2012 By admin

Guyana needs small and medium-sized businesses if prices are to be kept stable, Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) President Imran Saccoor said. His comments came as he addressed businesspersons at the opening of a two-day seminar for small and medium-size enterprises on Wednesday.

Berbice Chamber President Imran Saccoor

According to the chamber president, small businesses help to create competition. The workshop aimed at assisting potential and small business persons to develop the skills needed to successfully expand their business. Among some of the topics to be discussed over the two days include the factors which could influence and affect small businesses, and ways and means of investing.? Apart from investment opportunities, there will also be a session on the business climate, where participants will have a chance to learn of the advantages of knowing when to invest and when it may be more advantageous to make changes and divest. ?The chamber?s president noted that at the end of the programme, it is hoped that participants will be able to access financing for projects that they may want to undertake.

?We are hoping that we will be able to work with at least 15 of the 35 participants so that they can develop. We will work with you for six months and by then you should be able to continue on your own,? Saccoor said.He also took the opportunity to call on the University of Guyana to implement programmes for small entrepreneurs.Region Six Chairman David Armogan said in order to reap the benefits of economies of scale, small businesses must group together. ?Grouping can also assist with the acquisition of land.? According to the regional chairman, the gap between borrowing and lending at commercial banks is too wide. ?You go to borrow money from the bank and they tell you that you have to pay back at a rate of 11 per cent, but when they have your money, they only give you one per cent interest. Something needs to be done about this; it is not fair.?? Saccoor, himself a bank manager, agreed with Armogan on this point, but defended the banking industry, saying that banks take a risk when they give a loan.
The high interest rate is to compensate for the risks banks take. However, Armogan argued that the way forward is for the setting up of investment banks, especially for persons who want to invest in the agriculture sector.? But Saccoor noted that there is a 50 per cent risk in that sector as a disease can affect the investment, and investors could be at the losing end. Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Clinton Urling said owning a business has many benefits if managed successfully.
?It gives you great freedom and flexibility to set one?s own agenda and work schedule; the financial returns can be good; you contribute to national building through job creation, provision of goods and services, tax payment and overall wealth creation and economic development.? Trade and Tourism Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Dhaneswar Denarine declared the work shop opened, and said it is a timely initiative.

Twitter said to have acquired fledgling video-sharing service Vine

Twitter has pretty much nailed text-based interaction, so it looks like it's time to diversify into video. According to AllThingsD, the blue birdie has snapped up a three-man outfit called Vine, a video-sharing startup intended specifically for bite-sized clips. You'd be forgiven for not knowing it -- the service hasn't actually launched yet -- and there's no word on whether it'll operate independently or be assimilated by the social network. There are bound to be more details revealed soon, and it might not be too long before you're sharing less in 140 characters and more in five-second clips.

CSA chief defends Proteas players against Collier's allegations ...

CSA chief defends Proteas players against Collier?s allegations ? Cricket News Update

Speaking out in defence of South African players after England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive David Collier accused them of having had a hand in Kevin Pietersen?s fallout with the England board, Cricket South Africa?s acting CEO Jacques Faul has expressed his disappointment over Collier?s claims.

?I am very disappointed that this has played out in the media,? Faul said while speaking to ESPNcricinfo. ?It is absolutely not true that our players provoked Pietersen.?

Faul explained that although he had met Collier face-to-face earlier while visiting London for the Lord?s Test between their respective teams, the ECB chief executive had levelled no accusations then. He went on to suggest that Collier?s approach lacked courtesy and decency, given that he had not discussed the matter with Faul before going public with the accusation in the media.

?It is not the way CSA goes about its business and it is not the way the ECB have done business with us in the past either,? Faul added. ?It is very disappointing because in the past our relationships with the ECB have always been cordial and constructive.?

The row between Pietersen and the ECB, sparked by the batsman?s retirement from international limited-overs cricket earlier this year, reached breaking point when it was revealed Pietersen had sent questionable text messages to members of the rival South African team, who were then visiting England and playing a Tests series against the Poms.

The exact nature of the messages remained unclear ? some reports suggested that they contained derogatory language used against England?s then Test captain Andrew Strauss and team manager Andy Flower, while others suggested they offered tactical advice to the South African team on how to get Strauss out.

Proteas players dismissed the text messages as banter, and steered clear of the issue. Meanwhile, Pietersen was initially dropped from the England squad, but after a series of talks between the 32-year-old and the board, the issue appears to be on the mend, and the most recent development has seen the ECB announcing its intent to re-integrate Pietersen in the national team.

Collier recently spoke about the issue for the first time, in conversation with BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, and claimed that Pietersen had been provoked into sending the text messages by members of the Proteas squad. This had in turn served as a distraction for the England team, who went on to lose the extended-overs series, and subsequently their top Test team ranking. However, Faul pointed out that the Proteas players had been equally disturbed, and had nothing to do with what was purely an ECB matter.

?This is an internal ECB matter in which we do not wish to be involved. It served as a distraction to our players that we did not need during the Test series,? Faul clarified.

New details of Sept. 11 consulate attack in Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senior State Department officials provided a more detailed picture Tuesday of the consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. A look at how they say the attack took place:

Sept. 10-11, 2012

Stevens arrives in Benghazi and holds meetings on and off the consulate grounds on Sept. 10. He spends the night, and for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. holds meetings only inside the compound. It is an enclosed area about 300 yards long by 100 yards wide, with a 9-foot outer wall topped by barbed wire and augmented by barriers, steel drop bars and other security upgrades. There are four buildings in the compound. Five diplomatic security officers are present, along with four members of a local militia deployed by Libya's government to provide added security.

Around 8:30 p.m.

Stevens finishes his final meeting of the day and escorts a Turkish diplomat outside the main entrance of the consulate. The situation is calm. There are no protests.

Around 9:40 p.m.

Agents hear loud noises, gunfire and explosions near the front gate. A barracks at the entrance housing the local militiamen is burnt down. Agents viewing cameras see large group of armed men flowing into the compound. Alarm is sounded. Telephone calls are made to the embassy in Tripoli, officials in Washington, the Libyan authorities and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound a little over a mile away.

Grabbing weapons

One agent, armed with a sidearm and an M4 submachine gun, takes Stevens and computer specialist Sean Smith to a safe room inside one of the compound's two main residences. It has a heavy metal grill and several locks, medical supplies and water, and windows that can be opened only from the inside. The other agents equip themselves with long guns, body armor, helmets and ammunition at other buildings. Two try to make it to the building with Stevens. They are met by armed men and are forced to retreat.

Attackers breach the compound

Attackers penetrate Stevens' building and try to break the grill locks for the safe room, but cannot gain access. They dump jerry cans of diesel fuel in the building, light furniture on fire and set aflame part of the exterior of the building. Two of the remaining four agents are in the compound's other residence. Attackers penetrate that building, but the agents barricade themselves in and the attackers can't reach them. Attackers try to enter the tactical operations center, where the last two agents are located. They smash up the door but cannot enter the building.

Americans trapped

Meanwhile, Stevens' building rapidly fills up with thick diesel smoke and burning fumes from the furniture. Inside, visibility is less than 3 feet. Unable to breathe, the Americans go to a bathroom and open a window, but still can't get enough air. They decide to leave the building. The agent goes first, flopping out onto a patio enclosed by sandbags. He takes immediate fire, including probably rocket-propelled grenades. Stevens and Smith don't come out of the building. The agent, suffering severely from smoke inhalation, goes in and out of the building several times to look for them. He then climbs a ladder to the roof of the building and collapses. He radios the other agents to alert them to the situation there.

The other four agents are able to reunite and take an armored vehicle to Stevens' building. They reach the collapsed agent and try to set up a perimeter. They take turns going into the building, searching on hands and knees for the missing Americans. Smith is pulled out, dead. Stevens cannot be found.

Reinforcements

A six-person quick reaction security team arrives from their compound across town. About 60 Libyan militiamen accompany them. They attempt to secure a perimeter around Stevens' building, and take turns going inside. Taking fire, Libyan forces determine they can't hold the perimeter. A decision is made to evacuate the compound and return with everyone to the reaction force's compound.

Evacuation

Agents pile into an armored vehicle, with Smith's body, and leave through the main gate. They face immediate fire. Crowds and groups of men block two different routes to the security compound. Heavy traffic means they are traveling only about 15 mph, and trying not to attract attention. On a narrow street they reach a group of men who signal for them to enter a compound. They sense an attack and speed away, taking heavy fire from AK-47 machine guns at a distance of only 2 feet, and hand grenades thrown against and under the car. Two tires are blown out.

They speed past another crowd of men and onto a main street and across a grassy median into opposing traffic. The agents drive against traffic, eventually reaching their compound. Security gets into firing positions around the compound and on the roof. They take more gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades intermittently for several hours.

More reinforcements

In the night, a team of reinforcements from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli arrives on a chartered aircraft at the Benghazi airport and reaches the security compound.

Around 4 a.m.

The compound's building is hit by mortar fire. The roof is hit and two security personnel are killed. One agent involved in the attack from the beginning is severely wounded. The men decide to evacuate the city entirely. They spend the next hours securing the annex and moving a large convoy of vehicles to the airport. They evacuate on two flights.

'Dancing' eliminates two former champions

Adam Taylor / ABC

Former champs Helio Castroneves (with partner Chelsie Hightower) and Drew Lachey (with Anna Trebunskaya) were eliminated on Tuesday.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

There can be only one winner each season on ?Dancing With the Stars,? and with the all-stars competing for a second shot at mirror ball glory, it was inevitable that the mighty would fall.

So on Tuesday night, the ballroom bash bid farewell to not one but two former champs. Season two victor Drew Lachey and season five?s top dog Helio Castroneves had the lowest combined totals of judges? scores and fan votes in this third week of the competition.

The eliminations weren?t entirely surprising. Both men had previously been in the bottom two, with the 98 Degrees boy-bander barely escaping elimination in week one, and the race-car driver squeaking by last week. On Monday, head judge Len Goodman said Drew?s cha-cha was ?overall terrific,? and Carrie Ann Inaba described it as ?tight and precise.? As for Helio?s quickstep, Bruno Tonioli thought it was ?brilliant? despite the star?s slip after stepping on partner Chelsie Hightower?s dress, and Len said, ?This dance deserves to be back next week. It was so good.?

With 24 and 25.5 points respectively, neither man was close to the top of the leaderboard. In fact, Drew tied with Kirstie Alley ? who also stood under the spotlights of shame this week -- for second-to-last place. (Bristol Palin took her usual spot at the bottom of the leaderboard with 22.5 points.) Sabrina Bryan also found herself in jeopardy after delivering a subpar reinterpretation of Mel B. and Maksim Chmerkovskiy?s season five paso doble.

Though Drew seemed to have trouble drumming up the same support he had in season two, he doesn?t regret a thing and seemed to suspect his ouster was coming. After Monday's show, he griped to the cameras, ?Still don't understand the judges' scoring. Still don't! And I guess I never will.?

?It?s going to be tough regardless of who went home tonight,? he said after getting the pink slip. ?But I can honestly say I would not change a thing. I came back because this is fun. I had an amazing partner.?

Helio remained his usual chipper self after getting his bad news. ?I want to thank Team Penske and Indy Racing League as well for letting me do this,? he said. ?I want to thank as well my family, Chelsie, and I want to thank America! You guys vote for me, I couldn?t be happier.? Thank you!?

Chelsie kept the upbeat attitude going with her farewell words: ?It was so fun! We had such a blast. He was such a fun partner to be with -- always such a joy, always such an amazing attitude. And he really really wanted it! He loved every minute of it. And it makes your job so much more enjoyable when you?re with someone who truly enjoys it, and he?s the epitome of that.?

Next week, things get a bit tricky for the surviving celebs. On Tuesday night?s show, they picked out the dances that their competitors will have to do next week ? and these are dances not seen often on ?DWTS?:

  • Gilles and Peta will be performing Bollywood
  • Sabrina and Louis will be performing disco
  • Shawn and Derek will be performing the mambo
  • Emmitt and Cheryl will be performing the bolero
  • Apolo and Karina will be performing hip-hop
  • Melissa and Tony will be performing the jitterbug
  • Kelly and Val will be performing contemporary
  • Kirstie and Maks will be performing the Charleston
  • Bristol and Mark will be performing rock ?n? roll

Based on the reaction of the stars when they heard their assignments, fans of Kirstie and Maks may want to find some extra phones to vote for the pair. When the actress heard she?d been assigned the Charleston, she dropped to the floor while Maks turned around and hung his head in defeat. Why? The dance is rather lively, something the ? umm ? more mature actress may worry about having the stamina to perform well. Then again, she?s pulled off some amazing moves before, and as Carrie Ann has already pointed out about this competition, age is just a number!

Were you surprised that two former champs got the boot? Who do you think got the toughest dance for next week? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!
